Complete Colonial shoe buckle

its so great to recover a complete "working" shoe buckle , that one looks to have a nice patina underneath the crusty layer.
the smaller buckle under it is an interesting one any better pictures of it (side view and the area of the holes ) ?

What's that thing in the first pic with a penny in it?

the majority of the metal looks like cast "pot metal"
