According to the Red Book it is real.

Liberty Seated Half Dollar - Variety 1 with no motto above eagle

Variety 1 ended in 1853 but was then resumed from 1856 to 1866

As worn as your coin is it would probably be a G4 ($30.00)

So what was supposed to be wrong with it, making it a fake ?? Even the O looks like it is raised and not stamped.

Hey willy, Here a short story about some counterfeit coins that are produced at many different times for different reasons. Not all counterfeits are of the 1877 Indian, '09 S VDB, etc... It's easier to get 30-40 bucks for a common coin and not get caught. Not saying yours is not real, but generally a person who has been collecting or dealing in coins for many years remembers all the tell tail signs that a fake coin has. So it may be that person recognized a part of that coin that was fake and new it instantly. Even though this site does not list the &quot mintmark, it still may be talking about yours.

it looks real to the untrained eye which is what im equipped with.. silver halves come in at a solid 88 vdi on the V3i. it would be interesting if you could air test the fake one and another silver half. im not convinced its fake.. if it is , they did a great job faking it

    Re: 1859,o conterfeit??

In my mind there is a difference between a modern fake and a counterfeit coin from the period. As far as modern fakes go, probably not much reason to fake this coin. If it is a counterfeit coin created during the period then it might have more value as a counterfeit. When I look at the pictures, the flat areas around the letters and images just don't have that struck look to me. But that is just my opinion and I am not any kind of expert.

I agree with the others, I'd definitely take it in to a coin professional...find out if it is really a fake or is it a counterfeit from the period??

A while back I found this interesting story about the Chinese counterfeiting U.S. coins. Apparently it's big business. If you go to ebay and type in “Replica seated half” or any other old coin, you’ll find just about any old coin you’re looking for “counterfeit” and cheep. Check out the factory here. http://coins.about.com/od/worldcoins...rfeiting-Ring/
