2010 Finds Review - October Through December

This is the fifth post reviewing my finds of 2010. It covers October through December. During this three month period I found 199 silver coins.

    OCTOBER 2010
    121 SILVER COINS - 6 COPPER - 14 INDIAN HEAD CENTS - 2 SILVER RINGS - 0 GOLD RINGS

It was now October, with cooler weather prevailing. Taking advantage, I headed back to the Boston park where I had dug up 18 silver coins the last time I had been there. Picking up from where I had left off, I began working the trashier areas of the park in an attempt to pluck out what silver had been hiding just below the layer of trash. This time I managed to coax 14 silver coins out of the ground, two of them half dollars.

The half dollars are dated 1911 and 1917, and the quarters 1943 and 1950.

This World War I Victory Medal is larger than a half dollar. Information on the medal can be found HERE. The ten silver dimes are dated 1912, 1934, 1941, 1942-D, 1943, 1945, 1946, 1949, 1950, and 1951.

I also dug up 26 wheat cents and a 1944 Australian penny.

This early October weekend was the best one I had finding silver while detecting with the E-Trac, picking up a total of 48 silver coins. I worked two very trashy parks to get them. I had to deal with numerous surface and sub-surface targets like aluminum screw caps, but it was well worth the effort.

On Saturday I made a trip to a park located in Eastern Massachusetts and worked one of the trashy sections for about six hours. At the end of the hunt I had 19 silver coins - 11 dimes and 8 quarters. I also picked up an assortment of other cool finds as well as the usual clad coins. The 8 silver quarters are dated 1916-D, 19??, 1941-D, 1942, 1942-D, 1952-S, 1959-D, and 1964. The 11 silver dimes are dated 1918, 1936-D, 1940, 1942, 1942, 1947, 1950, 1952, 1952-D, 1952-D, and 1958. The Indian Head cents were fun finds too.

The rest of the finds - about 20 wheat cents, a marble championship medallion, a silver ring, a 1933 Mexican 5 centavos, which is slightly smaller than a U.S. half dollar, a good luck pendant, and a good luck token.

Then on Sunday I headed to another park I had hit once last year. I did find several silver coins then. The park is very trashy though. The aluminum screw caps in particular are a major pain, and though for the most part I can make them out by their broken warbled high-pitched tone, they do still fool me on occasion. The park is layered with them! It makes me work much harder for the silver. After eight hours though I had managed to walk away with 29 silver coins. This broke my one day (March 4th) record of 21 silver coins.

    The 13 quarters are dated 1902, 19??, 1937, 1942, 1942-D, 1943-S, 1944, 1948, 1950, 1950-D, 1954, 1954-S, and 1962-D. The 16 silver dimes, dated 1917-S, 1929, 1935, 1936, 1936-D, 1937, 1939, 1940, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1944, 1950, 1952, 1956, and 1959.

There were other finds too, like a corroded 1847 large cent and watch fob.

It had been a busy week, so I had not planned to go detecting until the weekend. But I just couldn't resist the urge to swing the coil. To get it off my system I headed to a local site, determined to come home with at least one silver coin. The site had been kinder though, yielding seven silver dimes. There were other finds too, like several old wheat cents, a 1891 Indian Head cent, and other miscellaneous items.

    The dimes are all old, dated 1870, 1891, 1901-O, 1912, 1920, 1925, and 1927.

On this particular Saturday I met up with Scott (catskillcomics), Aaron (hockeyguy), and their friend John at a NY park. Even though the finds were meager we had a good time detecting on that beautiful day. I had hoped to score with more silver, but the park had been stingy. I scored with one silver Roosevelt dime, a 1848 large cent, two Indian Head cents, four wheat cents, and a silver ring.

Sunday afternoon had seen pleasant weather, perfect for detecting, so I made a stop at a local site. I dug up a few old wheat cents, a Merchants Exchange Hard Times Token, two Indian Head Cents, and a scarce date 1893-O Barber dime.

I had been waiting for the weekend to take a long drive to an old park located in Eastern Massachusetts. The weather had been perfect for it too. Once at the park I worked an area as best as I could and managed to dig up four silver dimes, dated 1892, 1916, 1942, and 1944, a 1802 Draped Bust large cent, a 1865 2-cent piece, four Indian Head cents, dated 1886, 1895, 1897, and 1900, a V Nickel, and 23 wheat cents.

It was now Sunday morning and I had the entire day to myself. I did not feel like making another long drive though, so instead I opted to detect at a park near Boston. I remained there for most of the day, working a very trashy area even during a brief late afternoon shower. I knew I had a good location after digging up six silver coins within the first two hours. It turned out to be another very successful hunt, as I ended up leaving the park with 26 silver coins.

    The 26 silver coins - a 1940 Walking Liberty half, ten quarters, dated 1936, 1938, 1939, 1944, 1944, 1947-D, 1952, 1957, 1957-D, and 1964,and fifteen dimes, 1919, 1926, 1926, 1937, 1940-S, 1942, 1943, 1943, 1944, 1944, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1947, and 1961-D.

Also among the finds were a 1841 large cent, a heads or tails silver coin, and a 1940 New York World's Fair token.

It was midweek when I headed to a Connecticut park in the late afternoon for a few hours of coinshooting. I selected an area I had not worked well on previous trips and detected there for three hours. It was a productive hunt, with the site yielding seven silver coins. The best ones were a scarce date 1921 mercury dime and a beautiful 1908-D Barber quarter. The 1948 Roosevelt dime I found while scouting another park a few days earlier.

The following are finds I made during the last three days of October. Late afternoon Friday I detected at a Connecticut park and picked up four mercury dimes and a dateless Standing Liberty quarter. Then on Saturday I met with John (midas) to hit a few sites. From them I picked up a large cent, two silver dimes, and a neat old sterling silver pin. Sunday was a solo hunt. I managed four silver coins, two Roosevelt dimes, a 1952 Washington quarter, and a 1920 Standing Liberty quarter.

    NOVEMBER 2010
    35 SILVER COINS - 2 COPPER - 11 INDIAN HEAD CENTS - 5 SILVER RINGS - 0 GOLD RINGS

Taking advantage of the cool and sunny day I headed out to detect for a few hours at a Connecticut park. I ended the hunt with four silver coins, all dimes, dated 1894, 1919, 1936 and 1952, as well as several wheat cents and a few odds and ends.

It had been lightly raining so I took the opportunity to scout out two new parks. I worked them for a short while, but both parks were surprisingly devoid of targets, with hardly any trash or clad coins to be found. I did manage a few finds though, including four wheat cents, two Indian Head cents, and one lone silver, a 1920 Walking Liberty half.

The weekend had been a cold one, too cold for my blood. A strong breeze had me begging for the warmth of the bed covers. Anyway, I did manage to make some good finds on Saturday, five silver coins, a silver ring, and an unknown copper. Sunday turned out to be a non-silver day, though I did manage a very corroded larger cent.

I met up with Steve (1147silver) very early morning to hit two sites he had selected. We spent about two hours detecting at the first site where I picked up several wheat cents, an Indian Head cent, and a mercury dime. After that Steve suggested we head to the second site, but once there we found that we were digging some deep clad and aluminum screw caps. The site had likely been layered with newer soil at some point. We then tried another location, but Steve soon received a call and had to leave. I then headed to a town common and detected for about two hours. From there I picked up a 1905 Barber dime, three Indian Head cents, an old Eagle on Cannon Artillery button, and several old wheat cents. The last photo is of finds from an earlier hunt.

The following finds are from a few sites I had worked over the weekend, two sites on Saturday and one on Sunday. I picked up a several silver coins, two of them old, a 1877-CC seated dime and a Spanish coin, as well as a total of about 28 wheat cents and 5 Indian Head cents.

The weather had been great on this particular Monday, so I took the late afternoon to detect for a few hours at one of the usual sites. There weren't many targets but I was able to rescue four mercury dimes from the soil's clutches.

Saturday turned out to be a very chilly day though, with the winds picking up during the afternoon making it even colder. I lasted only four hours at the park. I dug up plenty of coins from among the trash, but only three were silver, one being a half dollar. I also dug up a sterling silver ring and a 18k gold plated ring.

A Sunday and late Monday hunt yielded me a few more keepers. The Standing Liberty quarters are dateless, but I'm not complaining.

    DECEMBER 2010
    43 SILVER COINS - 0 COPPER - 2 INDIAN HEAD CENTS - 2 SILVER RINGS - 0 GOLD RINGS

Winter's approach would soon make it much too difficult to hit the parks, but I tried to grab whatever opportunity there was during this time to sneak out and swing the coil. This was one of those days, so in the afternoon I headed to a Connecticut park eager to cut a few plugs and hopefully dig up a silver coin or two. I did well, scoring with nine silver coins.

The following day in the afternoon I detected for a few hours again hoping to score with a few more silver coins. I didn't do as well as the hunt on the previous day, but the two that I did pick up did inch me closer to the desired goal of 1,000 silver coins for the year. The 1936 Washington quarter is in excellent shape, having no discernible wear on it.

It was cold on this day, so detecting at the park was quite uncomfortable. It had not been too bad at first, but then a cold wind picked up and it was all over. I quit after three hours, walking away with two silver dimes.

I didn't drive far for this hunt, opting to detect locally as I expected to be out for just a couple of hours. Instead of hitting a park I detected the sandy area of a pond. Digging had been difficult since the wet sandy ground had been somewhat frozen. I had to push hard on the shovel while sawing the blade back and forth in order to cut through the first inch, but after that digging was easier. The finds were sparse, but I did score with two old silver coins, a 1873 Greece silver 1 Drachma, about the size of a U.S. quarter, and a 1874 Canadian silver dime. I also picked up two silver rings.

A couple of hunts yielded me a total of eight silver coins, a 1945 Washington quarter and seven dimes, dated 1918, 1941, 1941-S, 1942, 1943, 1946, and 1951.

After several very cold days the chilly wind finally subsided enough to allow for a few hours of detecting. The ground at the site I hit on this hunt had been difficult to dig into, but not impossible. I had to use my small shovel though, since digging with the trowel was a royal pain. I did manage to find three mercury dimes, dated 1929, 1943-D, and 1944. The 1939 mercury dime I found earlier in the week while attempting to brave the freezing cold at a local park.

The site I worked was quiet and peaceful, allowing me moments of thoughts, which were only interrupted by the sweet sound of deep silver. I detected for about five hours, and ended the day with six silver coins, a 1908-D Barber half, a 1900 Barber quarter, and four dimes, dated 1909, 1916, 1939, and 1944.

The Barber half was my ninth of the year. The long grass and overgrowth of shrubs had kept it hidden from me all year, but recent mowing of the tall wild grass and the cutting off of the overgrown shrubs provided an opportunity to work the area.

Working the same site the following day produced a few more keepers, among them a 1946 Roosevelt dime, a 1939 mercury dime, and a 1945-P wartime nickel. I now needed just eighth more silver coins to reach the 1,000 silver coin mark.

Having the opportunity to detect in the afternoon for a few hours I headed to the same site that had yielded me a few Barber coins the previous Saturday. This time I decided to employ a grid, and it paid off. I picked up another four silver coins, a 1843 Seated dime and three mercury dimes, dated 1918, 1923, and 1943.

I couldn't wait for the weekend to try and pick up a few more silver coins before the year ended, so I took the afternoon to detect at the same park I had been hitting during recent hunts. The park has a very trashy section, so I worked that area first in the hopes of picking up a modern silver coin or two. I did better, digging up three Roosevelt silver dimes, dated 1947-D, 1956, and 1964-D, all three were no deeper than five inches. Now I needed just one more silver coin to make the 1,000 mark (without counting the wartime silver nickels).

At this point I moved out to the old field, one that had yielded several old coins during the past few hunts. There weren't many targets, but after a while I had what sounded like a silver coin. I was hoping for a Barber or seated coin, even a mercury dime, but what a surprise it was to see another Roosevelt dime in the dirt pile, this one dated 1957 - my 1,000th silver coin of 2010.

The vintage sterling silver cufflink was a sweet surprise.

2010 was a fantastic year for me, and the E-Trac proved yet again to be a great performer.

I have not Dave. It has been staying one step ahead of me. I have come close, but it has eluded me. I still have hope though.

    Simply amazing Angel.
That is quite the pile of silver... especially the handful of the 29 you got in a day.
    Love the coppers too.
The sterling ring depicting a torso of a person is extremely unique. Seems only right that you would find such a thing.
Thanks for the final 2010 installment. You had a banner year hitting 1000. I don't know of anyone else who can claim such a feat.

However... I am currently relishing in the fact that I have found more silver so far this year than the guy who found 1000 last year.

First let me congratulate and thank you so much for your excellent postings and the super year you had. May I STRONGLY urge you to consider putting all this together in a book format. I believe that your story needs to be memorialized in such a manner. A book showing your finds, your methodology and techniques would be a must for any metal detectorist and would be an instant classic please give this consideration, your Silver Milennium needs to be recorded in a format that is worthy of your great accomplishments, not only as a detectorist but as an emminent teacher of the art.

Bell-Two, I am absolutely blue in the face from saying this to him. I have even offered to help him write it, even though he doesn't need anyone's help as he is a fantastic writer. Maybe if everyone else chimes in he will finally agree to do it Right Angel?

I again commend you on a year that was just incredible beyond words.

This year I will try to keep up with everyone but I may not have much of a chance.

Thank you! I do appreciate the encouragement. I am considering putting something together. I just need to keep 'zapping' myself to action, though I suspect Angie will be doing that for me.

I haven't been out yet actually, though I did take a drive this past Saturday to briefly scout out a site. It felt great to swing the E-Trac once again, even if for a short while.

I'd heard rumors of such a silver slayer on other forum's, but I hadn't seen photo after photo after photo of said finds...from one quarter of the year no less! Incredible. This haul is sure to impress ANYONE, whether they metal detect or not, but it's your MDing peers on this site can really appreciate what you're accomplishing. Those finds take a big effort, dedication, and know-how. If this post isn't inspiring, I don't know what is.
