Six Silver - Six Coppers - 14 Indian Head Cents

I was able to get in three hunts these three days. Friday was a good start. I picked up four Indian Head cents, a 1923 buffalo nickel and two mercury dimes.




On Saturday I met up with John (midas) to hit an old site we initially thought we would have access to, but once there we were disappointed to find that the place was being used for an all day event. Bummer! :bangshead02: We then settled on hitting a few nearby locations, but the finds were sparse. We had a good lunch though.




Today was a different story. I took a very long drive - over a hundred miles - to detect at one park I had on my list from last year. It paid off, as I made up for Saturday's lack of silver, scoring with a total of six - a 1893 Barber quarter, two Barber dimes, dated 1901-O and 1906, a 1920 mercury dime, a 1952-D Roosevelt, and a beautiful 1877-CC seated dime.







But silver was not the only sweetness the park yielded. I also picked up six large coppers. One is a Draped Bust large cent, but I haven't attempted to remove the soil from the obverse to try and make out a date. The reverse looks fine though. One of the coppers is a Canadian large cent, though details are lacking. The other four coppers are dated 1848, 1848, 1851, and 1853.













The park was even more giving, yielding fourteen Indian Head cents and nineteen old wheat cents.





I do not know what this one is. I can make out 'Edward' around the edge.

Nice haul Angel Love the '06 Barber and the Seated of course lol Great condition on them. A good haul of coppers too. There is an overdate on the 1851, but I can't tell if you have it or not That copper disc with the iron inside of it looks like a campaign token I found before. I believe it may have had a picture of the candidate to be, inside the ring.

Ah! So that's what it may be. It is about the size of a quarter.

I will have to take a closer look at the 1851 large cent.

An incredible three days of hunting Angel. <: Look at all of those fantastic keepers.
Many of us would be excited at finding those in one whole season... I am definitely on that list.

On average... when you hit these targets in park settings, how long do you take to decide to dig the signal?
Is it instant, or is it a situation where you circle the hole taking readings (like I do) and finally deciding it's something to dig?
Do you even circle the target or just decide from the original direction you are heading?
This year I am working on trying to figure out the broken, less than perfect/ideal signals and your input would be helpful.

It actually depends on the location. At certain parks I am Quick Draw McGraw. lol I am quite familiar with the E-Trac's response, so I tend to make quick judgement to dig. However, when working sites where coins are deeper than average, or where iron and/or trash are a challenge, I do take my time, checking the target from various angles and circling around it in an attempt to separate it from the adjacent trash and other targets. Today was one of those times. The ground was difficult, so even coins at 8 inches were not hitting as solidly as I would expect. I inspected every deep sounding signal, and dug even if it was broken and uneven. Three of the large cents I picked up today emerged from those types of signals. The iron and mineralized soil were troublesome for sure.
