I always have a angel and devil on each shoulder when I detect standing homesteads. I would ask about family in the war, and if not....keep it and get back there and uncover that ring for em!

very nice tanacat.....i wouldn't worry about the plate. the mere fact that you are searching for a platinum ring for them is gesture enough. i don't even know what platinum would sound like, but if it's a nickel or worse, they're getting their money's worth out of you! this is symbiotic!
And now the metal detectorist pledge.
"I pledge to do my honor, to do my best AND seriously investigate ALL deep signals!"

Minelab SE (Is there really any other manufacturer?) 2011 totals = 24 silver coins, 3 LC,1 war of 1812 artillary button , 1 token, 6 IH pennies, 1 2 cent piece

Yep, nickel 23 vdi - 43 vdi range. Yesterday I swung over her wedding ring (she lost the band) and it sure jumped around a lot. I'm guessing the diamond prongs are different metal or something...

very nice plate! i agree with what most said about it.i doubt it was a family members.put it in your display case as a centerpiece.taht was a gift from above for you being kind enough to look for the ring on each visit! is that helping erase your guilty conscience yet?
