hey Ernie it has an old looking pattern , is it silver or gold gilted ?? from the pictures it looks like theres still leather from the harness still attached on the back . its amazing because we still find pieces of harness leather from colonial sites . size plays a little part in determining age because the later 1850's to 1900's , the rosettes tend to get a little smaller and made with more copper and brass and seem more machanically made while the older ones were noticebly larger and made with a more handmade look about them . just from what i see it has an early look to it , maybe late 1700's to about 1830's era . its a nice piece and i bet it rang your ears off ,huh ??

Ernie get yourself some CLR (calcium lime and rust) and dilute it to about half and half with water and brush it on for a few minutes and then rinse under the sink and you'll see that silver gilt pop out at you .
