Return to Nickelville on December 3, 2011 - UPDATE

I had about 3 hours to hunt this morning before we have to head out of town, so I decided to return to the spot where I have been finding all the nickels. We are enjoying unusually pleasant weather here for December, partly sunny and in the 50s.

Once again this site didn't disappoint. I can tell that the finds are becoming less frequent, but it still amazes me that there are still coins to be found after I've pounded it so hard.

Only one Buffalo this time, but three V Nickels! As the signals get more scarce I am finding myself digging the more questionable ones, and the V Nickels were deep with signals that were bouncing all over the place. However, if I saw numbers in the 12-13 range even for a brief second, I dug.

This makes 10 Buffalo Nickels I have found at this site, and 5 V Nickels. The Barber Dime was a nice surprise, it's only the second one I have found at this spot.

All in all it was a very fun 3-hour hunt!

Sorry for the quality of these photos, the battery in my camera is going dead, and it makes the color off. We're getting ready to leave so I don't have time to redo them.

You are absolutely correct, there was. My in-laws still live in this small town, and my father-in-law told me that when he was a kid in the 1940s they used to show movies outside of the community building in the summer time. He said there was a portable concession area on this lot with one of those old time popcorn wagons and a table where they sold drinks. He said that his weekly allowance was 15 cents, and he spent 5 cents on the movie, 5 cents on a pop, and 5 cents on a bag of popcorn. While this site is relatively junk free, I have found several old bottle caps there. I'm not sure what years this concession place was open, but from the looks of my finds it seems that it was only in the 1940s. Were V Nickels still in circulation in the 1940s?

Yes, I have really learned a lot about the E-Trac since I first hunted this site back in May of this year. On that first hunt I found 37 wheat cents and 6 Mercury dimes, but only one nickel and it was dated 1982. If I had only known about the old nickels I was ignoring! The soil at this site is rich and black and very easy to dig. After you get the plug open you can scoop the dirt out with your hands down to 6 deep or so. I will definitely hunt it some more, but I think I'm going to give it a rest until spring. Like I have mentioned, it is a small site and I have dug a LOT of plugs there recently. While I always make sure my plugs are hinged on one side, and I'm careful to replace my dirt and plugs neatly, I want to give the site time to heal for a while.

Were V Nickels still in circulation in the 1940s?

I wonder too if it was common to see a V nickle floating around in circulation around the same time as say the war nickle?

Wow, those nickels are in really good shape esp the V's (for their age)...

I would think the V's were still being carried around. We all carry 40-50 year old coins around most days (60's -70's)?

Well, I said I wasn't going to go back there this year, but I guess I lied. I had the day off today and I couldn't resist one more hunt while the ground is still thawed. After all, the site will have all winter to heal.

Again the finds were somewhat scarce, but I did manage to find four wheaties, three buffalo nickels, and a 1941 Jefferson nickel today. (Plus a memorial cent and a marble.)

I'm going to keep hunting this year until the frozen ground tells me I can't, but this will definitely be my last hunt at this site for a while. This was the first time I hunted this site without finding any silver. crying01

Tony, I just can't believe the nickels you are pulling out of that place! stretcher: And to have that many buffs with clear dates is amazing. I wonder if they had some kind of event there back in the day which cost a nickel?

you've probably found a few nickles that your father-in-law used to spend at that old stand , that pretty cool . yes they definately still had v-nickles being used in circulation during the 40's , i hope you get a few more hunts there Tony and lets see you pull some old silver there again.

It isn't much to look at, but here's the site. The red brick building to the right of the photo is the post office. All of the coins I've found have been between the water tower and the post office.

Dang, that site has been awesome. Thanks for posting that photo too. I love seeing people's sites. I could see looking right past something like that, but it has produced like crazy. Incredible!

Maybe in the spring you can open up the discrimination or try two-tone ferrous on the wide open relic setting and dig out some hidden keepers!
