It looks like a wanna-be-coin and it's heavily encrusted. Any thoughts what it might be? And no, not the half dollar, the round object next to it lol
Also, any thoughts as to how to get the encrustation off?
Thanks.

Bob it looks like a token or large penny ( like a British cartwheel or similar) , the cemented looking granules are very stubborn to remove . its usually very hard but you can try to make it brittle by either heating the coin up or freezing it or both then using a hard wooden toothpick to pry off.

Thank you, Dan. I don't recall finding any coin encrusted like this. Do you think that this is a chemical reaction with the copper or is the crud just somehow physically pounded into the metal?
Thanks again.

Bob i'd say its definately a chemical reaction with the copper

Thanks again. I'm doing as you suggested and it looks like it's cleaning up some. I don't know how clean I can get it but I'm hoping that I can get it good enough to photograph and post it in the the finds tread.

with that type of encrustation it might be a slow going process Bob , take your time .

I am being very carefull and taking my time.
I can clearly see a head now and right about where the forehead is, on the edge of the coin I can make out the word "envious:I. The head is bald with no headress at all.

Thanks Dan. That may be the case. I'll do some more searching.
Thanks for taking the time to assist me with this. I hope that some day I can repay you.

Just an FYI. I got the coin cleaned up a bit and was able to get more information from it. After a lot of reasearch if finally found it. It is a King William IV one penny coin minted from 1831 to 1837 and the actual measurement is 34mm (my eyes are getting old) but I did verify the diameter.
Thanks again.
