I found this today, still has gilt on it and part of the thread still in shank. Marked Superior Quality on back and in script the letters I believe are C D, any help appreciated. I did check some button sites but I could not find this.

i've seen alot of similar buttons that had F " in old english with some kind of wreath going around them . they were post civil war fire department buttons and were very popular around the 1880's to about 1920. yours i believe is C P and is for city patrol or city patrolman as most towns didn't a police department only sheriffs , marshals , deputies and even patrolmans.
