Nice find! The other side on those seem to not hold up as well, I think because of the fine details on the coin....who knows

Love seeing shield nickels They only pop up rarely. Getting a date off of one is tough sometimes. What ever made them put a tiny date on them?

Nice Find ! Here's how to find an 1868 Variety Coin. Some of these Varieties are worth a lot. I have a Variety 3 that I paid $25 for that was selling for a Common Reverse like yours and didn't find out it was a Variety Coin til I received it in the mail. So, the next time someone finds another 1868, look at it good. Mine's in VF-40 and worth $300. The following info. is from the CherryPickers' Guide to Rare Die Varieties of United States Coins . I highly recommend the Book.
