I returned to the site I worked yesterday and detected the area for about three hours. No old coppers were yielded this time, but I did pick up one Barber dime, thirteen old wheat cents, and one flat button.

Nice hunt. Can you make out what that button says?
Oldest: 1755 Spanish silver; 1800 half dime | 1842 seated half | 1857 seated quarter | 516 silver coins in 2011!
Under all that black is a really nice Barber dime.Tells you a lot about when that area was popular. Nice hunt. Silver is getting harder to find though

We call them flat buttons and they are the common buttons of that time period. Since the large buttons come out of favor, these buttons replaced them. Early 1800's is correct. I usually label them 1820's as a general date. They would have been nicely gold in color. Buttons are hard to date, since they can be made any size at any time, but generally those are after 1800 and before 1860ish as 2 piece buttons were really popular by then.
