Tried some beach hunting for a change

Tuesday, the wife and I decided to spend some quality time together...me detecting the beach while she read a book. Now that's quality time together :hystericallaugh:But hats off to her for enduring my all day hunt. Pick the same beach Mike H took me to last week even though it was sanded in and...

    Little better Pequot hunt

Had a better Pequot hunt today, as we started to redo some areas near the village site that we did a couple of years ago. No bug bites today either  Ended up with 10 small round ball and 2 identical small buttons and some other nice lead pieces, on that may be a form of decoration. Mike H...

1899 Dog Tax Tag & a few other relics

Nice finds Dan. Anytime you can dip into the 1800's on a dog tag means you have a real nice tag :thumbsup01: I'm happy to see any pre '40's tags and love the ones from the teens. I'm just guessing, but I think that rosette is probably from around the turn of the 20th century. I have some here...

    Some small hunts

Things have been hectic for me lately, so small hunts are the only thing I have time for. The Pequot hunts have been minimal and pretty quiet lately. Only a musket ball or two every so often. So I received an invite to do some coin shooting with Bob E. and Mike C. at one of Bob's fields. It has...

    GPX and a new coil

Tony, you may be able to find this book at the library. I bought mine from ebay. It goes through a lot of time periods and has a slew of pictures. You can tell a lot about some of our finds by randomly scanning old photos.

    GPX and a new coil

Could be. Twisting it improves its strength I would imagine. This piece is pretty thin and I was thinking the twists were more for decorative reasons. It looks like it was made for someone with small hands, maybe a young girl or woman. That is why the first thing that popped into my head was...

    GPX and a new coil

Here is a piece of iron that I dug and cleaned up a bit. This one I'm going to keep after it gets more work on it. Don't know exactly what it is but it's under 5" long. I'm guessing it could be a piece to hook tapered candles while dipping them. But I'm sure it could be a thousand other things...

    GPX and a new coil

Had the day off today and decided to try out a new 10x5 DD coil for the GPX. Our sponsor John from JMT Metal detectors was excellent in getting that coil out to me fast :clapping: Thanks John. So I decided to try it out at a cellar hole that I got my nicest GW out of. That was the goal - to get...

So did the button hole live up to it's name?

It think it did  Went out detecting to the button hole I have been talking about lately, to see if the GPX could find some of the deeper buttons there. At best I've found buttons at the 6" mark, 7" if they were larger ones. So off I went today early in the morning. Detected about 7 or 8...

Another hunt and some more pain

 Yep, them Pequot hunts are getting dangerous ;) Got stung again by a yellow jacket. Sting number 4 for the year. :clapping: They kind of feel good after a while....free acupuncture. I think this is the 6th or 7th ground nest we have found. I felt safe in this field since we have covered it...

    Token/Coin LIARS!!

Nice coin Drew. I found 2 so far. One a long time ago and this one more recently. Congrats on a very early piece of American history. :clapping: You are dipping back into a very early time period of trading.

    Relic hunt with a sting

Yep, got hit by yellow jackets again this summer:pirate: Only twice though. My friend Mike got hit 10 (or more) times today. I bet he feels good right about now  but we did have a good day at the Pequot hunt. He got 3 or 4 musket balls with a huge 63ish caliber dropped ball. It not only had...

Couple of hunts and some nice buttons

I knew when I saw it come out of the dirt that it had a ton of silvering left on it. The others from this site held us just as well. Here's a picture before I cleaned it, that I forgot to include. The back even has some silver left on it too.

Couple of hunts and some nice buttons

Well, the Pequot hunts have slowed down both in number of days out there, and quantity of good finds. I did a Thursday and Friday hunt at the location where the conical points came from 2 seasons ago. Total finds for the two days - good vs bad? 30 shot gun shells, 102 bullet casings, 85 22cal...

New Pequot hunt and a pretty decent day

Thanks Dave. Today's hunt yielded 5 round ball and 2 scraps of brass. I'm posting pics of all of them so that you can see what we look for on this type of project. If you ever have a chance to volunteer in assisting archaeologists, you will be amazed how happy you will be if you find a musket...
