I started detecting at the transition from the BFO to the early TR/VLF discriminator era.It was kind of the Wild Wild West times for detectors. All shapes, sizes and colors. Those detectors had personality back then. Some had a lot of bells and whistles, but had limited depth capability. No too much was off limits and there were
usually always good things to find. There were a viwde variety of treasure hunting magazines and a ton of organized hunts with stuff buried that would make your jaw drop. A lot of those hunts would have 500 to 1000+ participants. Those events were like huge family reunions. Most of the people back then over 40 years ago were ages 50s through 70s. Sadly, most have passed away but no doubt are enjoying treasures of a heavenly kind.
