Civil War Buckle Shield

Here are some finds from yesterday that I made in a farm field where an old house used to stand. I was particularly happy to find the Civil War-era buckle shield, a first for me. I also found a trigger guard. Any ideas as to what type of gun it may have been from?

Thanks for looking and happy hunting!

Nice finds, I was out once this spring for about 1/2 hr, table spoon, mixing spoon and a old door hinge added to my collection. Checked out your You Tube, enjoyed the videos, encourages me to get out more.

Those are always neat finds! However, the heart design is not typical of issued military gear, which makes it less likely to be official Civil War equipment and more likely of civilian origin. There has also been some speculation that these harness buckle covers date to the 1870–1900 period.

I'm sure you are correct on all counts. Thanks for the info! By "Civil War-era" I just meant that they are from that time period, not that they were military. I think you are probably correct though, they are most likely from the later 1870-1900 period you cited. This one, at least, just doesn't have the look or feel of an item from the mid-1800s.
