Matron and buttons

Lodge Scent

Got out last Sunday for a hunt. Beautiful chilly morning and it was easy for the ticks to sense when a warm body was in range. But by noon it had warmed up and not a single tick on the way out. I managed to pull a couple of buttons from the shell midden/trash dump at the back end of the site. I was really surprised to dig an 1831 Matron about 5 feet from the well. Looking at my records, this was the 30th copper from that site. It was one of the few true virgin sites I ever located. I dug the first 25 coppers in the first 3 months after I found the site. It took another 15 years to find the other 5 coppers.

Way to sniff out that Matron! And wow, 30 coppers from one site? That is amazing! In my 50 years of metal detecting I have only found 10 coppers total, all US large cents. They just aren't common here in Ilinois.
