Went on the war path with the Indians

Hit a couple of spots over the weekend and came up with a different kind of assortment. I ended up with 5 war nickels. I've found war nickels before, but this just seemed a bit unusual to come up like this. One came from a school yard and the others came from a heavily pounded park. The Indians...

My best ever New Jersey copper, 7 Indians, Silver, flat buttons etc.

Hit a few spots recently, one being a park that has been pounded. At the park I pulled 102 coins on Sunday including 7 Indians, a couple of buffalos, Merc, Roosie, silver ring and tiny silver heart. One of the Indians was a better date, 1868. Also pulled over 20 wheaties and a bunch of clad and...

2 CT Coppers - One very nice - Buttons

Great finds. I have a M.33.34-Z.3 (below) and a M.33.33-Z.11, but not a 33.34-Z.11. Your coin is exceptional for the variety. May have been an XF when it was lost. Way to go! I'd be back pounding that spot until the ground freezes.

    Cool finds - Unusual assortment

I recently hunted several places and came up with an unusual assortment of items. While hunting a beach I came up with half a pipe bowl from an old clay pipe and a 1909 VDB cent. Tried a spot in the woods that I've pounded and still came up with an old button. The back reads London Double...

Went detecting and Mr T showed up with a winged goddess

Went detecting today at a park I've been going to for more than 30 years. Found a bunch of wheaties before Mr T showed up with a winged goddess. Glad he was in silver. He's lost some weight as he is "down" to 14 grams. Actually pretty heavy for a silver ring.

    Silver dime trifecta

I must admit, I don't get very excited about finding silver Roosevelts anymore. I also don't get very excited finding Mercs. I really like the old stuff and that's what I'm usually on the hunt for. The other side of the coin is, if I'm going to be out detecting and not finding anything old, it...

1778 Machin Mills Half Penny Found !!

I just thought I'd throw this in. A number of you mentioned you have the Whitman Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins. I thought I'd put up a photo of kind of a who's who of contributors to the book. This photo was taken during a break of the Frederick B Taylor sale at the Vista...

1787 Laughing Head Ct. Copper W-2820 Miller 6.1-M

I've been collecting colonials for close to 30 and have learned a bit about them over the years. I was also a contributor to the Redbook for about 10 years in the colonial section. I think it's important to have a place to go to get info on your finds. I know colonials. Others here know buttons...

    1785 Mailed Bust facing right

You must be detecting some great spots. I think with enough time this piece could be attributed. Although it's missing a lot of detail, it also has a lot. Off hand I think there are only about 40 different varieties of the 1785 CT's. Several have the bust facing left so it's easy to eliminate...

1787 Laughing Head Ct. Copper W-2820 Miller 6.1-M

Great find! It's nice to be able to attribute a Connecticut variety when you find one. There are over 350 different varieties of Connecticut coppers. These are broken down to a number of different types, your Laughing Head being one of them. There is also a Small Head, Large Head, Hercules Head...

    Old silver

Here's the 2 spoons I found this year that appear to be from around the same time period. The one on the top is the one I recently found at a site where the house was built in 1786 and the one on the bottom I found a few months ago at a house that was built prior to 1757. Interesting on has the...

1778 Machin Mills Half Penny Found !!

Looks like you got something there. Most of the "Machins" pieces I see are actually George III and not Machins at all. Your's looks right. Here's a links to a Machin's Mill photo plates online. http://www.coins.nd.edu/ColCoin/ColCoinImages/Machin/Vlack-2.jpg I've been collecting colonials for...

    Batwing or Baldric Buckle

Went by a house built in 1765 with some friends yesterday. Didn't find much as the soil had been changed so much, but did find this buckle in a section in the rear that hadn't been dug up. It's like a small size batwing buckle. I've added a photo with one I found earlier in the year for size...

    Old silver

Posted this first in coinshooting by mistake. Got a call from a buddy who got permission to hunt some private property. House was built in 1786 so hopes were high. Property was sold a few years ago for $7,650,000. Evidently a lot of the yard has been moved around and we didn't find much in the...

    Couple of Barbers

Hit a different area of an old spot and came up with a very worn 1897 Barber quarter. Within 150 yards to the right of this spot I've probably dug 30 pieces of silver including seated, Barber, mercs and even a half real. This last area didn't seem like it would be any good and I only dug one...

Toasted NJ copper and Sterling Belt Buckle

Went knocking on doors yesterday to try and get a spot to detect. We spotted an older woman in her yard and pulled in. There was a date on the house of 1804. Spoke for a bit and her husband came out and gave us permission. They were going to be leaving in just over an hour and said we could...
