    Detector for my son

I have a problem, kind of. My last remaining brother passed away last October and I came into possession of his few belongings, one of which was an XLT that I gave him years ago. My son came home from Arizona for Christmas and I was showing him my brothers stuff. He said he would like to...

    Want to Feel Old?

I remember all of these except Alexander's. I think it was a retail chain but there were no stores near me.

    My Quest Begins

I have started a collection of U.S. Great Seal buttons. So far I have 18 different backmarks and only have about 200 to go! But, they are very reasonable to buy right now. I just took a chance on a mixed lot for $9.99 and hope there are some backmarks I don't have. If they are duplicates I...

Ramrod guide and the tip to a ramrod?

I found these two pieces at the native American site Sunday afternoon. I am pretty sure the one piece is a ramrod guide and most likely from a flintlock musket but, I am not sure about the second piece. It fits snugly but moves in and out freely. Bot pieces are brass.

    Dig it All

The site I am currently hunting was a native American village until the very early 1830s. There have been no other inhabitants since then. There was trade with the British and Americans and Andrew Jackson even stayed there for a brief period during the Indian wars. So, every signal, no matter...

    Between the Storms

My buddy and I managed to get in about two hours between the storms that rolled through south Georgia today. He took me to the site of a native American settlement that disappeared in the early 1800s after being wiped out by the Militia in a case of mistaken identity. They thought they were...

    Small finds

Found these in my pocket change. Nothing much at all but treasure is where you find it. The 1925 nickel still has some detail left.

The Sun Shined On Me Today

Even though it was very cloudy and cool as my buddies say "The sun shined on me this time". I went to a well hunted home site with a friend and the Deus sniffed out some overlooked stuff among the trash. My first find was the 1899 S half dollar. I almost passed it up because it rang up as a...

    Buckle(?) Help, Please

I don't even know if this would be considered a buckle. Is this part of a bridle? If so, where would it go? I think it is brass and there are no markings on it.

    Almost threw these away.

Going through the junk side of my pouch I came across this button and overalls snap. If I hadn't looked close I would have thrown them out with the rest of the trash. The one piece button was full of dirt. I thought, when I found them that they were shot shell base remnants because they ring...

    Fancy Rein Guide?

I found this last week and thought it was just a broken rein guide until I cleaned it up. If it is one, it is the fanciest rein guide I have seen. I don't think the loop is broke except for one tip.

    Confederate Button Number 2

I am on a roll. 45 years without a confederate button and now two in less than a month. This one isn't the prettiest and it is missing the back but I'll take it. It's a Georgia State seal staff officers button with a fair amount of gilt left on it. And, I found my first Tombac button here in...

More finds with the XP Deus

These are the keepers from the last two hunts with my Deus. They include 7&1/3 buttons/snaps, a possible bridle rosette and half a pin showing a girl on a fence. One of the buttons may be a another first for me. The one pictured by itself may be hand made. I think it portrays a fort that...

Button Help Please and Thank You.

I found this button yesterday at a mid 1800s site. I couldn't tell what it was until I cleaned it using electrolysis. I think I remember seeing something like this before. At first I thought it was a house on a hill but a friend suggested that it may be a fort instead. The back was full of...

Thought I had my second Confederate button

I found a Florida state seal staff officers coat button today and thought it might be Civil War era until I got home and looked up the backmark. "M C Lilley & Co. Columbus O" did not make buttons until 1876. But, I still had a good day playing in the dirt and learning the Deus. In addition...

    opper disc?

This piece came from the same site as my CS officer's button. It is copper, very thin and there are no markings on it. The stub on the back looks like it might have been used to rivet the piece to something. The whole is a little larger than a pencil lead. I don't think it is a button but don't...

My 45 year Quest is over!

I was invited to hunt a new site today that has given up some good finds in the last few days. My hunting buddy dug a nice flat button about five minutes after starting to hunt. I was finding odds and ends, mostly kitchen stuff, when I got a signal that should have been a pull tab. It rang...

    Rosette and Buckle?

My brother sent me these two pieces and I am hoping someone here can give me an idea of age and use. The rosette is brass with an iron back and it feels like there may have been a stud in the center. The buckle is thin brass and has no markings on it. It came from an old house in Berkley...

Bardsley Bros and a small button

I was going through a jar of old finds and came across these pieces that I could use help in identifying. The first piece has "manufactured By Bardsley Bros New York" on the front and the back is blank. The button has "chess" twice on the back and appears to have some type of material...

    Ever Misplace a relic?

I have a counter stamped large cent somewhere in my house but, for the life of me, I can't find it. At least I have pictures. What I thought interesting about it was that the initials stamped into it are the same as my first and second ones.
