Thanks guys! I would assume the buckle is from the 1800's based on the area it was found in. I tend to wonder if it was a regular belt buckle or part of some kind of horse harness.
Here's a pic of a cigarette holder with a silver end that I think looks pretty close to what I have.
I've got two items I'd love some input on... The first is a small sterling item. My theory is that it is the end of an old cigarette holder, but I'd be curious if anyone has other ideas. The second is a large buckle. It almost looks like there is some kind of marking on the back but it's...
I got out for a nice hunt Saturday. Things have been so busy that it was my first hunt in two weeks. I haven't even had time to think about detecting, which makes it tough to figure out where to go when the opportunity finally comes. So for lack on any better ideas I headed to a nice spot of...
Like the title says... it was a long, long winter here in Upstate NY. I wasn't able to get out digging until early April due to snow and frozen ground. Even then I've only been out a handful of times as work and life overall have been very, very busy. I did spend a few hunts at a new spot...
Well, another year is in the books. Although 2013 was not my best year of detecting strictly in terms of the value of all my finds, it was nevertheless very easily the best in terms of finding the good stuff - old coins, nice relics, and otherwise desirable treasure.
2013 marked a real break...
I haven't been on the forum much lately, and it's been almost a month since I have gotten any digging in. Rain, cold, and a decent snow storm right before Thanksgiving had me thinking that I was in for the earliest end to the season since I started detecting. But we got a bit of warm weather...
Another slow weekend digging wise. I only had a bit of time for detecting on Saturday - I spent it in a wooded spot and didn't get much other than two wheats, a bullet, a large round lead item, and an odd lead blob that I'm hoping someone can identify (top right in the pic). Sunday was pretty...
Not much time for digging this past weekend but I got in a few short hunts. No showstoppers, but I got two keepers at least - a nice '15 Buff and a cool student fare trolly token from the 40's or 50's. Also dug an odd, old looking junk ring, a scary knife made from a railroad spike, and a...
Here's an idea for a new monthly award category - there are currently ":beerbuddy:est of awards in the coin, jewelry, and relic categories. How about a ":beerbuddy:iggest Heartbreak award? I think we all know the heart racing, stomach churning joy and heartbreak of the following:
The...
I got out both Saturday and Sunday mornings this weekend. I finally made it to the spot a few towns over that I've been intending to get to for a few weeks now. I had good luck at this spot this past Spring but had not been back since. My theory, based on the inordinate number of buffalo nickels...
Saturday was COLD and very, very windy and the forecast called for sporadic pop up showers so I stayed close to home during a short morning hunt. I got back into the turf after spending the last month or so in the woods. I did pretty good and ended up with a nice silver ESPO ring, a '51 quarter...
I had planned today to head a few towns over to a spot I have not hunted since early this season. But I was up late last night watching the Red Sox game and pickling beets and lamb tongues (now there's something I never thought I'd type). So I wound up sleeping in a bit and by the time I got...
This morning I headed back to the wooded spot I've been working lately. It was another nice Fall day and I was hopeful for some keepers. This location once again obliged, although I did not get any silver coins this time. But I can't complain about what I did get - the nicest crotal bell I've...
It's been one of those weeks at work and in general... so some nice time digging was badly needed. I stopped on the way home from work at the wooded spot I have been hunting lately. I was in such a rush to get to it that I forgot my hat and the bug spray in my car - big mistake! I stuck it out...
I got in one evening hunt this past week. I stopped at one of the huge old parks in the city on the way home from work. I've never had great luck at this spot but it's so big there's no way there isn't something good there somewhere. It was a beautiful evening and although targets were pretty...
Maybe it's a reach, but I see a fish... I don't think this thing is that old but I'd love to know what the image is supposed to be, if it means anything, and what this object was. Any takers? The dime is for size of course.
Thanks!
I headed out Saturday to the same wooded area that gave up some nice keepers last weekend. Once again I had very good luck, scoring a dateless Buff, a '64 quarter, a 1902 quarter, and a 1902 dime along with a few older wheats and a bit of clad. The Barber quarter was a nice surprise as it was...
It's getting harder to get out for evening hunts after dinner now that it is dark by 7 or so. So today I got in a quick hunt before dinner on my way home from work. I stopped at a wooded spot that gave up a great silver spill earlier this summer. No old coins today, but it was all worth it when...
This was my first weekend since mid August that I was able to get in some good swing time. Saturday I headed to a new spot that had given up a Merc and a War Nickel on my first hunt there a few weeks earlier. Conditions were lousy - wet grass and bone dry dirt. Still, my third target was a nice...
