    Barber Quarter

I drove to a small town with my dad on Saturday, and after we had a nice lunch together we drove around looking for a place to detect. We tried the city park but decided that it must not be a very old park. A conversation with a local resident confirmed this later. I finally decided to try a...

    My Favorite Find of 2011

I'm resurrecting this old thread in remembrance of my mom who passed away last week at the age of 81. I inherited my love of history from her. The fond memories have helped me through this tough time.

Photos of hunting grounds and American landscape

From the 2013 American Detectorist calendar. I took this photo of an old home site in western Illinois.

A Happy Return After 65 Years

I found this token on July 5 in the back yard of a house here in Robinson. I posted a picture of it on a Facebook Group about the local history of Robinson, Illinois. A few days ago my wife received a phone call from Susan Hays. Apparently a friend had told her about my Facebook post. She...

Civil War Era Pennsylvania National Guard Button

I got out yesterday for a short hunt at a permission here in Robinson. It is a circa 1900 house on a corner lot. It didn't take long for me to realize it had been detected before. There were no coins at all in the front or side yards. The back yard was fairly large and extended to an alley...

I Sold My Silver and Bought a ...

A couple of weekends ago I took all of my common date silver coins to a place in Vincennes, Indiana and sold them. This was a big decision for me as I had never sold any of my finds in my 45+ years of detecting. However, I decided it was silly to hang on to this stuff, especially since the...

    Triple bucket list day!!

It reminds me of the Greek alphabet. Is it supposed to say Beta Gamma Beta? Except they have used Greek letters to spell it out?

    YouTube Videos

Just a heads up that effective June 1 YouTube is now going to start putting ads in your videos whether you want them to or not. I received an email from them today outlining their updated terms of service and this was one of the items: YouTube’s right to monetize: YouTube has the right to...

Sunday Door Knocking - Some Old Coins and Relics

I got out with Digger Don and Digger Al yesterday for some door knocking in a town we'd never been to before. It was tough going, this town had been hit pretty hard by door knockers previously. Almost every person told us their yard had been detected before. Nevertheless I ended up with a few...

    Determination

The Roosevelt and Fairbanks piece is awesome, Tim! I found several similar examples online, they all call it a watch fob. Too bad you couldn't detect that yard thoroughly. It happens.

First Hunt of 2021 for Tony Two-Cent

This past Saturday I got out with Digger Don and Noah for some door knocking in a town we had never been to before. The going was slow, we got a lot of friendly yeses but it seemed that every yard had been hunted before. Nevertheless, I came home with a few keepers. No jaw-dropping finds but...

    Ten Years

I joined this forum 10 years ago today, February 26, 2011. What a great decade it has been. When I joined the group I didn't even have a metal detector. When I asked everyone what machine I should get several people recommended the Minelab E-Trac. I placed an order for one from Sun Ray...

    Les Claypool Goes Metal Detecting

 I've never met either of those guys, but I've seen them both in concert. I've seen Robert Trujillo with both Metallica and Suicidal Tendencies, and I saw Les Claypool with his solo band. Here are couple of photos I took of the both of them:

    Les Claypool Goes Metal Detecting

OK, so it's only an elaborate ad for EMG bass guitar pickups but it's still pretty entertaining. :) https://youtu.be/lP8RzPu54rY For those who have never heard of them, Les Claypool is the bass player for Primus and Robert Trujillo is the bass player for Metallica.

    No Mercs, Jeff!

My brain was trying to convince me that it is part of a roller catch but my brain could be wrong. I couldn't find a match.

    Help with dating bullets?

I'm definitely not an ammo expert either, but I do know that lead gets a white patina on it when it has been in the ground a long time.

    Milestone on Mercury dimes

Close! I started out with one of the first detectors that Charles Garrett built in his garage! My parents bought it new in 1968 and I still have it.
