Dug up a 1760 King George II on Sunday (1/15/17)..I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me! The counter stamp which was a bit of a downer, but I was still thrilled to dig it!

Very cool find, congrats! What's with the counter stamp? Never seen that before, but then I don't get to dig stuff that old. :daydream:
 
Thanks! Not sure either. I've been researching trying to find any info on counter stamps and who the person may have been. But no luck so far.
 
That is a wonderful find! :notworthy:

Counterstamps are somewhat common on older coins. I like them in a way, they add history and provenance to the coin. It looks like your stamp says E. Gibbs. Very cool if you ask me.

That is a great find and I personally love that counter stamp! Some counter stamps are a bit crude but that is cool!

But that is a guess at what the E stands for since nothing pulls up with just E Gibbs.

Thank you so much! It was found in New Jersey so that matches up. It seems this coin was owned by Sir Edward Gibbs, a British Army officer (Lieutenant General) who became Lieutenant Governor of Jersey.

Congrats on finding a great piece of history! As others have stated on here, counter stamps are way more collectable than just the plain coin. HH, Dave.

Grats on the Hibernia. That was the last year of milling, like the KG2. Interesting that many LC weren't counter stamped. Mostly the silver coins were counter stamped. Obvi you now know it's more valuable with the stamp.
 
I think I'd rather have a counter stamped one.:yes:
You'll find many more without counter stamps. But it might be a while, if ever, before you find another with one.
