1787 Laughing Head Ct. Copper W-2820 Miller 6.1-M

I found this Copper a few weeks ago also, we had hunted this particular cellar hole a number of times, i decided to change settings on my detector, including lowering the sensitivity, after that started picking up more stuff including this coin. It is listed as a W-2820 Miller 6.1 - M with a Universal Rarity Scale of 12.

Great find! It's nice to be able to attribute a Connecticut variety when you find one. There are over 350 different varieties of Connecticut coppers. These are broken down to a number of different types, your Laughing Head being one of them. There is also a Small Head, Large Head, Hercules Head, Mutton Head and a whole bunch of others. It's what makes collecting Connecticuts interesting. I have a couple of Laughing Heads, both the M.6.1-M and the M.6.2-M pictured below. By the way, from a technical standpoint your coin appears to be at least VF. Way to go!

I've been collecting colonials for close to 30 and have learned a bit about them over the years. I was also a contributor to the Redbook for about 10 years in the colonial section. I think it's important to have a place to go to get info on your finds. I know colonials. Others here know buttons, buckles, civil war and a host of other things. Like I said, I've been doing this a long time. Photo below was taken about 25 years ago hanging out with Walter Breen, the genius of American coinage. That's me at left about 30 pounds lighter and still with brown hair (now mostly gone) You cant miss Walter right next to me. Always in tie-dye. He also always wrote in purple.

Nice Copper Butchy. I would love to find something like that here in central NY, but the odds are not so very good.

I know very little about Colonial Coppers and what I do know I am learning here at AD. Why is this particular copper considered as a "Laughing Copper" ? Is it because the image appears to have a smile ?
