Went back to a site that is a old Toll road stop were I previously had found an 1776 1/2 Reale, and 1864 indian. Found a 1884 Indian, Axe Head (10 inches down), and a odd little iron box with a quarter size coin like thing on top of it. Any ideas on age of the box and axe will be appreciated. The axe is the length of a soda can.DSC00298.JPGDSC00295.JPGDSC00297.jpgDSC00296.JPG

Nice IH. That box is at the absolute latest, 1875. You can see kentucky and the horses for the derby. The derby was inaugurated in 1875. I wonder what the cabin represents.

any ideas about the axe age?

The axe looks like one of the various types of shingle hatchets and probably had the "notch" at one time down on the bottom of the blade side where it looks chipped off. These notches were placed there around the time of the civil war (give or take a few years) and purposely used to pry up the new "wire" type nails that were being made around then and after . so in short your hatchet could date from around then to now as these are still being made today.

Thanks for the info about the axe. Based on the finds in the area I thought it could be around 1860s to 1880s
