1911D or 1914D You decide

I was taking more pics of the penny i found and i think i finally got it. As you can tell from the pics I have had a hard time making a decision. I know when i first looked at it it was 1914 but from that point on it looked like a 1911 about 4 out of every 5 times i looked at it. I can see a 4 looking like a 1 but a 1 looking like a 4 is more of a stretch. i think i have a keeper (or seller) :peace:

Looks like an 11 to me, sorry to say, tho it looks like a 14 in the first pic. I would invest in a good loupe.
 
i would have to have that puppy in my mits to tell for sure. loooks like a 14 in the first pick and an 11 in the last .. whatever , its a nice oold wheaty
 
This is a 1914D. I compared it to the one I found a couple of years ago and there are two identifying marks that confirm this for me.

1. The elevation of the bottom of the 1 and the questionable number are different. The 4 is lower on the 1914D. On the 1911D they are even.

2. Even in the weak pictures there is a visible nub sticking out on the right side of the questionable number.

The first and third picture show the 4 clearly. All the photos show the elevation difference.

Oops, I was gonna say a 1911 with corrosion on both sides of the last digit (1). lol I thought the nub on the 4 had to be a lot longer on all the Google images I saw :dontknow: Now I'm not sure what to think. But I do know there are 6 obverse dies for the '14D
 
That's a good observation on the nub. I agree it should be longer. The elevation is more telling. What do you think? This is a tough one.

Edit: The nub is at the right elevation as well. Get some steel wool out and clean that up better. lol lol lol

It's real tough :confused: I have seen corrosion do funny things to coins. They don't even look like the same coins all because the lighting and angle changes a bit lol My heart says 14 D but my usual luck and mind would say 11 D rofl I would not spend the money to slab it (as enviormental damage) but I would get a nice, clear close up of the whole obverse of the coin and e mail it to PCGS, Anacs, NGC and see if anyone would be willing to check the 6 obverse dies for other matches. I tried to locate the 6 varieties, but couldn't find them. I hope it's a 14D but I can definitely state that it is not an 1877 Indian Head Penny :thinkingabout:
 
I think it's a 1914. I agree with the elevation levels of the 1/4, the 11 was even, and these do not appear even. But don't take my word for it.
 
Maybe put a light piece of paper on it and shade it with a pencil/crayon to see if shows the relief better? Could be difficult since it's such small font. Who knows.

Maybe it's a 1944? The more I stare at it, the more I can make it seem like anything I want it to be! :twirlingeyes: Just kidding.
 
It really needs an expert in the field to confirm it. Remember, each year had many obverse dies. Without seeing every obverse die for the 14 D or the 11D we can't tell you for sure. Why not call it a 14D until someone proves it wrong lol Seriously, a good close up e mailed to the top 3 grading companies may get you one reply :dontknow: And that would be the end of wondering :yes: Hope it's good news for you.
