A few good finds and an interesting ring

Hey diggers, I hit an old school yard and an old house and found a few keepers. The ring is a neat find and part of the reason I love this hobby so much. I am always learning something new and interesting when I research my finds. I have never heard of "Niello" or the 'Niello process" until now (Google Sterling Niello jewelry). The ring is marked Siam Sterling and depicts 2 fish with some sort of figure in the center. I did some research and determined it is none other than Matcha, Queen of the Mermaids! I also found one of those coal scatter tags (1930's I think). It rang up as a perfect 12-13 at 7 inches deep. Thanks for looking and HH, Dave.

Neat scatter tag too. They sure do sound like nickels.

The VFW token cleaned up nicely as well.

Here's a bit of trivia on Siam, now Thailand. The first 1804 dollars were struck in 1834. The US government wanted to make a presentation of all the circulating coins to the King of Siam. Unfortunately at the time they were not making silver dollars. So the checked back and saw the last time they made silver dollars was in 1804. So they made up some dies with an 1804 dated silver dollar and struck a few for the sets they wanted to create. Little did they realize that when they made silver dollars in 1804 they were using leftover dies dated 1803. As a result, the first 1804 dollars were made in 1834. This is also the reason there are 4 known 1804 proof $10 gold pieces. They were struck at the same time in 1834 for these sets. The difference is they did actually strike 1804 dated $10 gold pieces in 1804. Your trivia for the day
