I grew up in Hagerstown, Md. back in the 50s and 60s. During the entire civil war it was either a Union or Confederate camp. When a contractor cleared a lot all we had to do was walk around and pick up bullets and buttons, no detector needed. Still, I never found a confederate button!
And, like a dumby I very seldom kept anything I found. I gave most all of it away and when I joined the Navy in 68 my brother's inherited all the rest of my belongings because they just knew I would never be coming home. They were right to an extent. I married and moved to Georgia after getting out in 73.
As for detectors, my first was a used White's 4900 that was a gift from my older brother. I am a firm believer in knowing your machine and sticking with it. In 40 years I have only owned 4 different White's detectors. I have had my DFX for a few years now and am finally learning what it has to teach me!
