A KG II and an Irish Halfpenny

Rescued a couple more coppers this morning. The 11" coil I picked up for the Deus is earning its keep. The first target of the day was the KG II halfpenny. Classic "on-edge" coin. Wish I would have taken a picture of it in the hole. It wasn't particularly deep at 6 inches but because it was on edge, there wasn't much metal exposed to bounce a signal off.

The Irish halfpenny was just luck. I was exploring a patch of thick woods near the site and was fortunate to put my coil over it. Just enough detail to give it an ID. KG III Irish halfpenny. Looks like 1766.

It was shallow but right under that root.

Managed a couple nice buttons and a hunter's lost compass. The compass sounded a little too shallow to get too excited about.

Drew I consulted the oracle and it shows 16 for the year. I have been lucky lately for sure. Interestingly, looking at the data, I have to go back 8 coppers before I get a repeat of the same type. What's been an eye opener for me during this run of coppers is that these have all come from pounded sites. I actually swore out loud in disbelief when I dug that KG II yesterday. This KG was three feet from the cellar hole at the site that I found a USA button some years back. Needless to say we hit that site with everything many times over looking for more USA's. A Whites, 2 Minelabs and a Deus plus others I don't even know about hit that site hard. That adage is definitely true.....you never find everything. And the main reason you don't find everything is of course iron masking. 13 out of those 16 coppers I found this year had iron in the hole. This KG was masked and on edge and it took the big coil with the machine cranked up hot to hit it. It's hard work but there are goodies still to be found at every site.

Great hunt Jeff and good to see you strolled into the edge of the woods to nab that second copper. You're so right about never, ever giving up on a good place. The Classic Head LC I found a few days ago was from a cellar hole I'd hit two times before. I swore I'd been over the spot before but obviously not.

Thanks John. I bet you indeed put your coil over that LC before. This time you may have hit it from a slightly different angle and that's what it took.

Good self advice Donnie B ! I bet that site where you dug that awesome tree shilling had been hit hard also.

That site was probably hammered the first time in the 70's! Dan taught me a lesson I had forgotten one day. I have always concentrated hard on sites because I have known for 22 years of detecting that no site is ever completely hunted out. There is always something missed or masked by the iron in the past. He pulled a knee buckle out of a cellar hole that I had given up on and wandered off. After that day, I relearned what I had learned. Never give up.

:lol: I wish Al. The only experience that is helping me is to know to dig a lot of holes. It's not like I know there is a copper there. At these pounded sites, I dig any signal with even the slightest hint that it might be something other than iron in the hole. I wish there was more skill to it. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then if they dig enough holes.
