A week at two sites

Last weekend I had great luck at two sites I'd hunted many times before and had pretty much written off as hunted out. So I figured I give them both a few more chances this week. I got in a few week night hunts and some good digging both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Once again I proved to myself that you should pretty much never give up on a spot. Between the two places I dug another 334 coins which included 30 wheats, two older nickels, two older Canadian pennies, and six silver coins. The three silver quarters all came in one hunt which is the first time I've ever managed to do that.

The weather was fantastic all week. Saturday and Sunday were so beautiful it almost hurt. The site I was at has huge, open fields will rolling hills and it was cool to watch the shadows from the clouds race across the green grass. Temps were in the 70's with a nice breeze and the skies were deep blue with huge white clouds. Sometimes it is almost too much.

In addition to the coins I got the usual keys, Scout slides, token, etc. I did get one odd item (three pics below). It appears to be a large polished stone (looks like agate) seated in a silver setting but attached to some kind of base metal with an odd silver loop coming out the back. This one kind of has me stumped. Does anyone have any ideas?

I'd say that you had some pretty good luck. Six silvers and 3 of them are quarters.... :congrats:

30 wheats from the hunted out sites is fantastic.

I am guessing that the polished stone probably hung from a necklace.

Regarding the item pictured at the bottom of your post, it looks like the silver ring part used to be perpendicular to the stone mounting, but it has been bent over. I'm not really sure how big it is, but it looks like it could be a napkin ring.

I entertained the idea that the ring part was perpendicular to the base at some point but it seemed like it was too cleanly bent for this to have happened from being stepped on or something. However, if this was the case then I would guess the item is a ring as the loop would be the right size for a finger. So perhaps the item is a bent hand made ring. It seems odd that the base of the ring would be made out of some kind of base metal though. I may try cleaning it up and polishing it a bit to see what it looks like. I'm wary of trying to bend it back into shape though for fear of breaking it.

Hey Z, the part around the stone (bezel) was probably silver plated at one time. The band is silver so that it does not turn your finger black like the base metal would do if it was copper based. A lot of people are allergic to anything but silver, platinum, and gold, but that may just be in our heads lol Plus it is cheaper than silver. The stone looks an agate, but one part of it looks like a Jasper, but it probably is an agate. A jeweler would know right away. Nice find and it probably is a ring.

It's the darndest thing... those crappy sites start producing as soon as you leave! lol lol lol

Next time you come up we can hit the spot that gave up the three quarters... it is huge and I know there are still goodies there. BUT it is a real challenge and I bet you will curse me something fierce for taking you there! >8)
