Another drapped bust

Managed to get out and dug another drapped bust largie thats 3 out of this area along with several early wheats as you can see the coppers come out pretty toasted, the only silver from here has been a merc and washington but a lot of area to cover. If you look at the coin the only thing i can see date wise is a 37 so I am thinking 1797 and the 9 wore down? It is larger and thinner than my other 2 only slightly but noticable. Maybe I can get back after this heat breaks. HH

Great old copper! I think its a 1797 as well. A draped bust is still on my list.

Nice find! A 1797 or 1807 for sure - leaning toward your guess of a '97. It's up to you, but for me personally I'd use an SOS pad on it which will likely bring out some more detail. Your're certainly not gonna lose any value on it. Folks have a wide range of thoughts on cleaning these old coppers so don't take offense - that's just my take. Of course if the coin was in better shape or had some patina left then I'd certainly be more careful.

Del it is a low area with a creek running through the middle so I am sure over last hundred years its flooded a bit, even the washington and merc I dug were black like they came out of water. I dug a few indians and wheaties all toasted!

John I have done that in the past too with mixed results, in this case I can see the bust and partial liberty and date so I will just leave it be. But I did manage to reserect a KG2 with the sos pad and olive oil soak but the british coppers seem more resilient to me.
