Awesome Week Including an 1857 Seated Half Dime

Digger Don

With the days growing so short these days I've only been able to hunt for about 45 minutes after work before it gets dark.
It's been an awesome week. First, Thursday I hunted one house and dug a 1963 Washington. That broke last years total by one. 148 Silvers for the year. Friday, I had time for one more house. I dug a 1940-S Washington & a 1943 Merc.

Now for Saturday.
I took a two hour drive with Digger Al & Hiluxyota to do a little hunting. We arrived at the park about 7:00 Am. Hiluxyota was first on the board with Silver. ( I let him tell his story ). I dug a worn 1891 Indian and Alec dug a cool button " Illinois institution deaf & Dumb". We were able to find out that in 1848 the Institution was built in Chicago for the training and treatment for the "Deaf & Dumb". Wow, how times have changed.
On our way to our second destination, we came across an old church that was built in 1867. We saw a grounds keeper cutting up a fallen tree so we stopped and asked if we could hunt. He said yes, go ahead.
My very first signal was a 12-37 at 7" so I was hoping to dig an Indian. After digging around a root, I finally got to it. It was a small disc so I thought I had a button. Then I saw the silver rim, my heart started pounding. Is it a Trime? A little rub and i uncovered that I had just dug an 1857 SEATED HALF DIME. Wow, Talk about a Bucket Lister. It was only 8:30 in the morning and my days was complete. LOL. Before the day was over, I also dug another 1891 Indian,a 1902 V nickel, a 1927 Buff and a couple of Wheats. Alec dug a real nice 1897 V nickel, a few wheats and a musket ball.
We all had a great day. Thanks Tom & Alec!!

Wonderful finds Don but that little half dime is amazing! As you saw, they always ring up like Indian head cents. Congrats on getting another bucket list item. Best wishes and HH, Dave.

Great finds Don, that half dime is really sweet! I noticed it predates the church by 10 years, so that was really something unexpected! Nice button and Indians too. :congrats:

Wow what a great week. Nor only did you find a 1/2 dime but you picked one in great shape. That is a great find. Don't forget to find 6 more IH's so you complete your roll. Awesome year on the Unique finds and silver count. WD

Do you Illinois guys have some kind of magic soil out there that preserves coins ? Those Indians are beautilful ! And the half dime is a great find.

Huge congrats on the beautiful Half Dime, Don! :perfect10:

That's an incredible find, and it's in really good shape! I bet that put a big smile on your face.

I really like the Deaf & Dumb institute button too. What an unusual and interesting item.

Alec's 1897 V Nickel is one of the nicest dug examples I've ever seen. Wonderful! :thumbsup02:

Congrats on all the terrific finds! You guys are killing it this year! :notworthy:

Thanks so much. I think 44 is going to be it this year. We got close to 8 inches of snow last night:frozen:. I bet you got even more up there. You never know though, it could warm up and melt all the snow.:crossfingers::crossfingers: What, it could happen !!
