Beautiful day to hunt

[FONT=&quot]My keepers from today's hunt, using the CTX 3030 for the first time. A Flying Eagle penny (unknown date), a Wheat penny (unknown date), 2 buttons and what I think is a 69 cal musket ball??

Not the greatest day finds wise, but it was 65 degrees and beautiful, so nice to hunt in warm weather! My buddy got 2 KG II...I almost made him walk home lol.

It drives me crazy when I can't date a coin lol. At least I dug my first Flying Eagle :)

No problem, always willing to help where I can. And yes, I hate not knowing the dates as well. I found a coin this spring in a field where I needed a home brew pick time chip through maybe 6 inches of ice and frozen dirt. Looks like a pretty smooth FE, but no matter what I did I couldn't confirm it. That's even worse than no date! Lol. Still trying to get that FE off my bucket list!

I could tell mine was an FE two different ways. I rang it up on my Deus and AT Pro when I got home and it was the same as the FE test coin I bought to make up my VDI charts. The FE rings up way lower than other pennies. Then, after I got some of the dirt off I could see most of the wreath on the rear and it has those little acorn looking things pointing at each other from each side.

The coin I found rang up about the same as the fatty Indian I found in the same field. But it was worn down and not as thick as it should have been. I could just make out part of the wreath on back but not enough to confirm anything. The front has even less detail, but extra smooth in the places a FE would as opposed to an IH. I've found some pretty thin worn coins before, but even the seated dime I found last summer had enough outline left to ID it and get the date.

To get a bucket lister on it's maiden voyage is a good sign I'd say. :thumbsup01:

Nice finds. Grats if you did actually accomplish the FE milestone. Mine rang like a 16VDI, but I think it was on edge.
Idk if you want to celebrate, tho. Many of the FE are porous and don't last too well so there is a better chance. Just be aware that the FE from 1856-1858 were the same composition as the 1859-1864 Indian heads. The 1859 has a similar wreath to the FE whilst the 60-64 have the different wreath and the addition of the shield which was present across the remaining years until 1909. As in there would be no discernible difference between an 1859 IH and 1858 FE when it comes to VDI readings. They have the exact same content and weight. When it comes to the thinner IH, yes, they have a definitive difference in VDI readings. I think your best bet is to see if you see multiple spikes on the front. If you can only see like 2 on opposite sides of the coin, you can bet its a FE, being the wing tips. If you have like 3 sequential, you most likely have a '59 IH.
