canada coins question

why is it that late sixtys canada quarters and dimes which the book says are nickel can come out of the ground as clean as silver yet american nickels and nickel clad coins come out of the ground reddish brown ?
 
In 1968 Canada discontinued the silver content in their quarters and dimes . Some silver content quarters and dimes were made during 1968 though .
 
the quarter i found today is a 69 but clean and deep so i know its been there a while i found a deep dime a while back the same way i also air tested both at home and the signals out of the ground bounce all over
