Found a clipped reale today. Hit at 37 VDI on the spectra V3I at 4
I'm now wondering if its real considering it hit low on the VDI scale.
37 is more like pewter, but then again Lee found a silver chain that read the same so I really don't know.

hey Chris about how big is the piece can you post a regular coin next to it for a reference??

just a note here : if it is a cut 1/4 of an 8 reale it would be two bits and it would definately ring high like a silver quarter or better on a detector . unfortunately these coins (8 reales) were one of the most counterfieted coins in colonial and federal period times. My buddy Frank (Fsa64) found a cache of 11 8 reale counterfiets a while back , they were all made of pewter and silver plated.

That was an exciting find. Too bad it was so cold today Chris,I could have used a couple more hours of that.

When I first dug it my first thought was that it was pewter. I didn't know at that moment if coins where ever made of pewter so I had my doubts.
With what Del said and given its dull appearance and ringing in at 37 VDI I think that's enough to say that it is indeed counterfeit.

Personally I think I like it more being counterfeit .

I think it gives a better story than a real one.

It may not be worth anything but still a cool find in my book.

Here is a comparison sided with an IH penny.

Thanks for the replies and info.
