hey Ernie it has an old looking pattern , is it silver or gold gilted ?? from the pictures it looks like theres still leather from the harness still attached on the back . its amazing because we still find pieces of harness leather from colonial sites . size plays a little part in determining age because the later 1850's to 1900's , the rosettes tend to get a little smaller and made with more copper and brass and seem more machanically made while the older ones were noticebly larger and made with a more handmade look about them . just from what i see it has an early look to it , maybe late 1700's to about 1830's era . its a nice piece and i bet it rang your ears off ,huh ?? ;)

Dan

Dan, it is Silver gilted and it's 1 5/8 in Dia. and yes the it is leather
still attached to it and yes it nearly blew my ears off and I am hard of hearing. lol

Ernie get yourself some CLR (calcium lime and rust) and dilute it to about half and half with water and brush it on for a few minutes and then rinse under the sink and you'll see that silver gilt pop out at you .

Dan, thanks again, you are a walking encyclopedia on this stuff and a great asset to all of us to have you around.HH
