Thirty states issued Tax Tokens during the depression. They were used as coins to pay sales tax.

By the end of World War II, most of them were gone. And few people alive today know they ever existed.

Except for us treasure hunters, who dig them up when we are metal detecting.

They came in many different sizes. Some were round with holes in the middle, some were square, some were made of compressed paper, or zinc, or aluminum, or brass or copper. They came in many denominations, and all of them were worth less than a penny.

Always wanted to find one but I think that MA did not issue them. I do know that an old hotel here in town that burnt down had a token, but that one still eludes me also.
