Hey Buckle Guys / I need a little help with this one

I dug this today. I'm not sure what this was used for.
It has a pat. date of 1875. Any Ideas??

Looked far and wide but only found one other that was found at another forum. Also looking for ID help. No such luck. Great find though!

Actually, if I read the stamp right, it's "pat April 20 1875". I've scoured the patent listings for that date and I did find one for a necktie and badge holder. Drawing and descriptions are vague, but it's the only buckle looking item patented on that date.

It's under a suspender part. I gave up on what they were.

If I read the patent information correctly this buckle was used along with an attachment as a shoe buckle or to attach other articles.

DOD, I think it might be 29 Apr 1875. The tail of the 9 is very short though.

I don't think there were any patents issued on April 29, 1875. They were issued on the 20th, 27th and May 3rd according to the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office).

I've always associated these as a type of light dress buckle or very light strap or tie as these are almost always silver plated.

I think I'd agree, altho the original Pat had a slightly different and more ornate frame. However, the date is only when it was patented. Easily a design can either be altered before production for a final product, or the frame can change slightly after many years of production, but just enough that the pat still applies to the overall design. It is odd that the depicted diagram shows it more like a belt, but in the write up says it is primarily used for shoes. So as Dan noted they'd be plated. Prob a dressier type of shoe buckle for the Sunday's best.
