It just might be..... 1909 Liberty Head (updated)

a large cent. The weather is beautiful today and I got permission to hunt a property that the house was built around 1908.

I dug a ton of trash and some clad. When I got home I noticed one of the coins did not match anything modern and had a green corrosion on it. Used a tooth pick to remove some of it and I could see stars around the edge. Out came the Red Book for a tentative I.D., meanwhile the coin is soaking in olive oil. I just hope I can get a date. (off the coin) I'll post a pic. when I can tell.

If it is, it would be a very rare find for around here.

Well, after soaking overnight I was able to get a date off the coin and a faint outline of a V. I have never seen some of the older coins before so I did not know what to expect. Yes it is a nickle and now my oldest find.

I hope it is. There are large cents with the stars around them. Hope you scored a copper

Having never seen one and considering the corrosion, I thought it could have been a large cent. After cleaning I could make out it was a 1909 V nickle in pretty bad shape. Took my hunting buddy back to the same house and he found a 1903 nickle in VERY good shape. We are going to have to hit that house one more time.

yes your correct liberty head we just call'em v-nickles. its an oldie , congrats again Ferrous

Any V nickel that you can see and read the date is considered in very good condition up here lol Most of ours are just burnt toast. Congrats on the Liberty Nickel. You will probably pull some more good targets from there.
