Got out with Todd and Ray from Va (Kray) last weekend and this friday with Todd.Last weekends hunt we bump into double trouble (just kiddin fella's) Foundation hunter and Butchey.
finds were slim last weekend but did find a weird ornate piece of brass someone dug sitting on a rock.I grabbed it because it looked interesting.Dab..any ideas what this was off of? Todd mentioned maybe from a musket? kinda scratching my head on this piece
this friday was a pretty good day for us. We hiked our butts off all over a mountain side but it was well worth the effort.
1st site todd plucked a bunch of large designed cloak buttons.I got one button.

next site I plucked out another cloak button & a very nice 1806 draped bust at a site me and Todd hit pretty hard 2 years ago.was in with iron but musta just caught it on the right angle.cleaned up pretty well.
at another cellar hole I got a silver spill. was a nice day out and a great way to start off 2015

Wow what a great looking draped bust largie , been waiting for you to post it :poke: congrats . its hard to tel just what the brass piece is make sure you bring it with you the next time we get out together.

BAM!!! What a day, big silver spill and a beautiful large cent! Way to go Dave! The cloak button on the left is one design I havent seen before, very interesting :)

Nice finds Dave,im glad I got to talk to you and Todd, what are the chances of that meeting like that in another state,im glad our winter got extended, Happy Hunting Gary

Dave, that brass piece is very similar to a musket butt plate I dug a while back-http://www.americandetectorist.com/forum/showthread.php?16449-1787-1-Real/page2&highlight=musket+butt+plate
Scroll down a bit to see a close up. Excellent finds as usual!

thanks everyone! I cleaned it using a finger nail  Drew it does look similiar in shape and design but mine is very frail and thin. usually butt plates are heavy duty

Nice finds Dave. Back to the grove of work so more time to be scouring here. lol. Silver dropped from hunters? I can't imagine a site would look like that if it lasted sometime until the 60's (based upon the 50's dates of the dime and quarter). Someone already showed the example of wick trimmer.

Maybe the piece is near the butt plate on the back of the stock. There would be 6 brass nails attaching it. Obvi the pic I found isn't the same. It's for a more modern rifle using screws to attach the plate to the side of the stock.

Now THAT'S how you start off the year! :thumbsup02:

That 1806 Draped Bust is simply gorgeous, Dave! Wow, what a beautiful coin! :loveit:

Thanks for showing the photos of it in various stages of cleaning. How nice that the dirt just flaked off so easily.

Congrats on the awesome start to 2015! :clapping:

Beautiful draped bust LC, love the pictures of the cleaning process. Silver spill and some nice buttons.....:thumbsup02:. You're already rockin and rollin in 2015.

Congrats Dave and best of luck for 2015! LC in that state is fantastic. I'm not a relic expert, but obviously the brass piece was attached to something long and flat. Could it have come off an antique woman's hair brush or comb? Thanks for posting.

John
