Killer tearout hunt!

Hi all,
It's been a while since I had any finds worthy of posting. But I hit a street tearout Sunday morning and apparently beat Milco to the punch. They stripped about a block of early 1800s roadway down to the clay base, about 2 feet down.

First minute there I hit a 1907 IH. Not long after popped a pocket knife handle. Dont know why, but there were a lot of zincolns in the mix. But almost to the end of a 2 hour hunt I found part of a skeleton key, a ring with a few flakes of gold plating left, and a crusty no date IH. I also made the best 2 finds in the last 5 minutes. An 1875 IH encased in wet clay that came out almost as red and shiny as the day it was dropped.

The best find in my opinion was a token from H. Stanfield distillers. Took a bit or research, but found it's considered a CW token and dates from 1865-75. An auction listing from 2013 puts its value at $128. Best 2 hours spent this week! Thanks for reading, and HH!

Thanks! That 1875 IH is fantastic! Has some porosity, but may still qualify as XR condition. If so, book value is around $125. That would make that my most valuable coin to date, as long with the highest value token. ( not selling, just keeping score)

Lake has been too rough to hunt, had bad flooding so the rivers are too high to hunt, and now mosquitoes are so bad its impossible to hunt grassy areas. (Had one bite me next to my eye and forgot I had my shovel in hand....:blackeye: ) So saw that tearout while driving by, it was too tempting not to try. And I have no idea what the slop part means

Wow, great hunt and yeas I can attest to the mosquito issue being bad. Maybe the worst I can remember. Nice job on the recoveries. WD

Update: figured it out! The token is for a barrel of "slop" which is the grain mash left over from the fermenting process. It apparently was commonly used for livestock feed.

Congrats Chris on the finds. I went to the lake the other day and thought it wouldn't be too bad with the wind out of the SW and apparently the wind changed by the time I got down there. The mosquitos carried me back up the hill though, which was nice.

I love the tokens. To me that is why I metal detect. Finding coins comes as a close second.

B'll slop is a waste organic liquid that was used for feeding cattle. It was valuable to farmers and the distillers just wanted to get sell it cheap. Each distillery back in the late 1800s would have a token like this. Definitely a good find for there are not many of these out there.

Thanks much! I figured out the slop part, and quickly realized how rare those type of tokens are. Hours searching online and only found 4 references to them. A total of 2 tokens with both listed in 2 places. Odd thing is both are from Milwaukee, so assume it's a regional practice.

Haha, doesn't sound like such a great honor! But I saw another bigger tearout today and hope to hit it in the next couple days. Also hoping you didnt already clean it out-i need a shield nickel too! :lol:

One more notable find! Thought it was a corroded and bent zincoln, but I was wrong. Upon closer inspection after a bit more decrudding, I found gold plating underneath, and a pattern that looks like a face above a horse maybe. Possibly was a button?
