Yesterday we had some rain, not enough but some so today I decided to go and hit my field again. My thought was that the ground now has some moisture. It was dang hot out there today.

I went to the area that I got the capped bust dime and the first target was this CWT.

Not in the best of shape but identifiable as OLIVER BOUTWELL

MILLER

TROY NY

and the reverse says

REDEEMED

AT

MY OFFICE

1863

Here is a picture that I took off the internet:

Its made of brass.

I don't know if I should include this in my signature as a coin so I will let the members decide that for me.

Also got a Levis Strauss button....anybody know if its old??

Thanks for reading and HH everyone.

Nice token, AL. Surprisingly there aren't many tokens that get dug up this way from the CW. Sure this wasn't quite the battlefront in the North East, but I'm sure there was the usage of tokens around here and quite a bit. For a sec I thought the title said GW now CW.

Idk on the Levi. They were around since 1853. That looks like a pocket button and the only thing I am aware of with pants is that tiny pocket coming about sometime when pocket watches were big. Those however, have a snap instead of a button.

Its a "store card token " , because of the war people and banks hoarded money for when times got really tough . Merchants , and businesses and even some banks started making tokens to advertise and drum up commerce in their areas . Al the token definitely looks civil war era (most were and many have dates stamped on them) and is a great find as there were not nearly as many tokens produced like regular coins , also after the war was over these tokens quickly fell out of favor with most everyone .

Boy, hasn't the weather been crazy....either pouring or 95 degrees. I had the same thought about the ground being moister Al. I went back to some spots I hunted last week and darned if I didn't hit lots of deep silver that I know I previously passed over when the ground was bone dry. Keep at it Al and congrats!

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes, the weather has been awful. I like the Green Mountain Metal Detecting videos so I feel lucky to find a item that they also recovered.
Also thanks for the info on the Levis button.
