Need Some Help With This 1864 Indian head

Digger Don

New member
My son dug this 1864 Indian today. He looked it up and the book said that in 1864 some Indians had the letter L on the front left of the bottom feather. This one is worn but it looks like it might be there. If anyone knows more about these, could you give me your opinion. My camera isn't the best, but take a look. Thanks

It looks like there's something there Don. It don't look much like a L  But if it wasn't there you wouldn't see anything at all.
So in my untrained , unprofessional opinion  Id say it's a L.
Nice find Alec!
Congrats!

It is in the right spot for the L. When looking for the "L", look at the Indian from the 9 O'clock position. In other words look from the word United and past his nose until you come to that second smaller ribbon. Go nose to nose with the Indian  Also the bust is pointy verses a more blunt ended one. Now also look for any doubling on the date, like the subtle remains of a date that was higher up than the date you see now. There was also an over date on some of the "L" varieties. Great coin!!
