Post heat hunt UPDATED

Well between the heat and some health issues, I haven't been out in quite some time. The heat sort of broke as temps have gone from the mid 90's to the mid 80's and the humidity from the mid 70's to the low 60's. I felt really rusty so I stayed close to home again and hit some nearby woods. The only luck was a Rosie and some kind of ring with 'XXX' inside along with the mandatory clad. The ring looks like copper to me. In any case, it felt good to be out again but it was not a long hunt as it quickly got hot right around noon time.

I've had more than a few hunts redeemed by the good old 1964 Rosie. They always make me feel lucky and somehow crafty for just breaking into the silver. Nice work on getting out and getting something shiny. I'm hoping to take advantage of the cooler weather myself. Congrats!

That's a pretty interesting ring... looks kind of thick and heavy for the usual run of the mill junker. Neat!

Yup, seeing any silver in the hole takes the pressure off lol I found a ring similar to yours a long time ago and I think it is of older design...like early 1900's. Could be wrong though. Mine was gold filled. Nice hunt.

The more that I look at the ring (and cleaned it up a bit), I'm leaning to it being an old wedding band. I can't get the gold color to show up in the picture but it is very bright yellow. I doubt it is copper as I originally thought as it would have been corroded. (The ring was down about 8 or 9 inches).

I do see several references online regarding an XXX stamp and how it indicates 18k! I'm not sure if that's true but if it is WOW!!!

Hopefully someone else can chime in and verify if they have ever seen or heard this before. One way or another it seems like it's worth a trip to a jeweler!

Is the ring heavy or light for it's size? Is there any signs of flaking or non gold color on the edges? That would tell me a lot about the ring. Hope it's gold :crossfingers:

Definitely no flaking and the color is uniformly even over the whole ring. As far as weight, this one is thin so it's not very heavy. I don't know if it approaches the correct weight for thin gold :dontknow:

I'll have to find a knowledgeable jeweler for definite answer but thank you for responding.

I finally found an estate jeweler who really knew her stuff. The ring is a wedding band of rose gold (18K) and dates from 1870 to 1910 and was commonly referred to as a cigar band ring. Not only am I thrilled for my very first gold ring but I am equally thrilled by the age of it. Here is a picture of it cleaned up.

That's pretty sweet. I've never dug an 18k ring myself, never mind one I could date to be over 100 years old. We're talking relic of the month candidate here if you ask me!
