Signal's There, Dig Hole, It Disappears Everywhere , Fill Hole, It Is Back, Ect.

I have a really odd thing today, I found a target reading 2 to 4 Vdi, weak but repeatable, a faint PP depth of 6-7. I dug the hole, searched the hole, it's not in the hole anymore, BUT I couldn't get peep fron scanning what I pulled out of the hole, neither a Disc signal or an AM. OK, I thought I'd just busted up a halo, so I filled the home back in. Well, the signal came back just like it was before I dug the first plug. OK, I must have missed it somehow, so I pulled the dirt out of the hole again, checked the hole, it was not there, but the innards I pulled from the hole showed nothing again. This was making me nuts so I filled the hole again to just quit. Yea you guesses it, that danged signal in both modes came back after filling the hole the third time.Is there a logical answer to what was happening? I gave up after that. martin

Martin a target reading in the 2 to 4 vdi range is probably an exceptionally small or tiny piece of foil or the like and they usually read alot deeper than they are because of their size . i know on my machine a piece of foil can read inches deep but in reality i find them just under the dead grass clippings . do you have a hand pinpointer:huh:

Yes, the Pro Pointer. What I experience with the PP-r these days is that is fails to pick up really small things that the detector still reads, so I really didn't put a lot of effort into the Pro Pointer once the signals disappeared by using the detector on the material I pulled from the hole on two different occasions. It's just really odd to me that the tones disappeared, but just like clockwork, reappeared after I refilled the hole and stomped it into place. I'd think that there's still be a tone when I spread out the debris around the hole. I have to agree though that you are likely correct. It has to be something super small near surface level, and the detector just barely reads it, and deeper due to it's size, while the pro pointer can't read it all. It has to be something right on the edge of non reception due to it's size. Thanks. martin

i am unfamiliar with the pro-pointer ...
i use the vibra probe 580 it is a pulse induction pinpointer and it does well on very tiny metallic items . try this the next time you get one of these targets with ultra low vdi's and it still pinpoints a few inches or deeper , use the pro pointer on the spot before you dig the plug .

glad i could help Martin , hey just for further references all depths on a machine is calibrated to a coin size object so generally smaller targets will read deeper than actually are and larger targets will read shallower than they actually but moisture or lack of can play a part into this generalization .

I use the Pro pointer, and after I pinpoint with the detector, I use the Pro pointer to check the surface before I dig. That has saved me much unnecessary digging. My Pro pointer can detect a piece of aluminum the size you showed to about 2. If yours does not have that kind of range, I would look into sending it to Garrett to be checked out.
