Token Spring

Hi,
I went out today with my buddies, and hit a good target with four tokens in one hole. The 5 dollar one is a new one for me. Snagged a little silver and an Indian head as well.

Thanks for looking

4 tokens in one hole :shocked03: why thats a "token spill" (ok i just made that up ) but its true , its a great find in my book and first of its kind i ever heard of.:notworthy:

Haven't found a single token ever with a monetary amount on it, so a token spill is pretty cool to me !

Tried researching the $5 token and found basically nothing. There were apparently a few $5 tokens made over the years, though most appear to be for bigger ticket items such as furniture judging by the tokens listed for sale online. But for general merchandise, I would think that it's very rare indeed. The few $5 tokens I could find listed for sale were posting for between maybe $6 to a few hundred.

:shocked03: I wonder why someone would carry bunches of tokens, maybe they were going to use all of them on one item. Sweet finds! :notworthy:

It's not the same as carrying around pocket change or your wallet to have on hand? Maybe going to the store for the week? But if $5 is for furniture then I assume that is a lot to be carrying around at once... idk.

The tokens date to the 1910's to 1920's. I would expect that at some point in the 30's or forties that they stopped using them. And that the kids were allowed to use them for play money?

I would think it is a rare token. I have never dug a five dollar trade token of any kind. Verdenburg was one of the founders of the grocery chain Hy-Vee. And given that five dollars was a lot of money in the early 20th century they couldn't have made many of them.
