Totally 14K or plated ?

I found this in a wood chips tot lot Saturday night and can't find out anything positive on the sites I have tried .
It's a man's ring , 9.4 grams and I see no obvious signs of corrosion . GB means it could possibly be gold covered silver or some other metal but the meaning of the "I" before the GB is not mentioned anywhere .
Any jewelry experts out there ? I have no idea if the stone is a genuine diamond either as I don't have a tester .

What number did it give you? Silver would give you a high number. If it is gold plated silver then you should see some wear marks. Hope it’s totally 14k for you!

Thanks Bucknut , It rang at a solid , unwavering 17 on the Nox . I see no wear marks whatsoever . Usually when I find phony jewelry that deep in the tanbark it's been there for some time and the plating would be already cruddy . It was about 5 inches down where the chips are a powder or tiny pieces mixed with dirt . It was dry at the bottom of the dig as we have had very little rain . It was a fun find regardless of what it turns out to be as it has been the first ring in a few years now .

Well I would be optimistic that it’s the real deal then. 17 can be gold…especially if it it is large and that ring seems big to me.

I just googled "what does 14k IBG mean". The IBG stands for I.B. Goodman Company out of Kentucky. 14K obviously is 14 karat gold.

That is a genuine gold ring! Excellent!!! Chances are good that the stone is a real diamond.

Wow , a good old *US of A " out of Kentucky ring no less , I am overjoyed ! :grin: I thought I saw a bit of "sparkly" in the stone but I thought I may have been wishfully hallucinating ( by the way it fits me perfectly on my ring finger ) . I'm thinking of looking into getting a diamond tester soon . Thanks again !

I broke down and bought myself a diamond tester , it turned out to be the real deal ! :yes: :bananadance:

Awesome find! Couple rules of thumb regarding jewelry. If it's stamped with the plain Karat such as 14K, 18K, etc. it will be solid. If plated, it's usually marked as such if it has any markings at all, which plated stuff usually isn't other than maybe the makers mark or name. As for whether the stone is real, no matter if it's a diamond, ruby, or whatever-if it's not an opaque stone, then it will usually have an opening at the bottom to admit light to make it brighter when being shown off. Fake stones don't radiate light the same way, so the makers don't spend the extra money to create the hole as it's far cheaper to glue or crimp in the fake stones.
I will say this isn't 100% accurate, especially for those particular pieces that are made to be replicas of something more valuable or when trying to fool a customer. Same as those Rolax watches you can find. Hope this helps!

Unfortunately this past summer has not been good for getting out. I think I was out once maybe early spring. Working odd hours with weekend OT, and then on weekends not at my regular job I've been picking up temp work. But I did get to enjoy a couple weekends working at the race track for NASCAR and IMSA, plus this past weekend working at the Ryder Cup event. Hoping to get out this weekend if my girl goes on her trip as planned. Plus if you look at the hunting buddies page, may be going to NC and hoping to swing there for a day in the hopes of finding some CW stuff.

Great find Cheap Thrills!! I agree that it is a true 14K gold ring. Mine rang about the same on the CTX. 12-16/17. I got a silver/gold ring combo last year and that rang up around 12-41, so the silver gives it an uptick. I agree with Bucknut, all gold baby!!!!
