If the ring is silver I would use a baking powder paste. As far as straightening it out, there is a jewelers tool (can't think of the name of it) that will do that.

Yeah get yourself a mandrel or "ring sizer" tool and the mallet , just be careful tapping it as metal that sits in the ground can get a bit brittle , especially brass and copper . With these you might have to heat up to make them more malleable .
