Wow, A second Seated Half Dime

Went back to the cornfield for a few hours this afternoon.. first signal I got a nice tone which ended up being what I presume to be a colonial copper but its pretty toasted. 20 minutes later, got another nice tone around 80, and I was shocked to find another seated half dime, 1871. She has some heavy tarnish, I'm hoping lemon juice will remove it.

After the Seated, the field shut down on me for rest of the day.. I hate finding good stuff right off the bat to only swing for the rest of time and not get another decent signal.

Isn't that the second in your career as well as week? :shocked03: I hope you can find something to identify that copper. That site seems to be loaded!

I used my loup with the camera to get a closer look at the half dime. Any ideas what the crusty stuff may be ?? Looks almost like rust.

Another great save, Congrats! As for the corrosion, silver coins are not pure silver, but also have copper which I think is the cause of red/brown discoloration. The tiny netherlands coin I found had it pretty bad but I was able to clean it up pretty good with the baking soda and coil method. Shined it up a little with a soft pencil eraser, but wouldn't suggest that on a more valuable coin.

I wonder if what you're seeing on the surface of the coin is pitting caused by fertilizer. It might be difficult to remove.

It's hard to see, but what i see is raised, the 1872 one was pitted.. I'm leaving both alone.. I'm quite happy as is.
