First Pocket Knife Today

Today I went back to the old schoolhouse site to find silver coinage. As usual it was miserable fighting the brush and I didn't find any coins. However, my first hit of the day was a pocket knife, which was a first for me. Some other odds and ends, probably from when the schoolhouse was used as a residence from 1944 to 1964.

The knife's handle appears to be Bakelite and only down about 3" so I'm thinking 60's on it.

I wonder what that bar on the right of the horse shoe is.

That would be a "toe grab", which is a traction device.
I'm curious whether it's jump welded (the way I like.....old school), or brazed on (newer...requiring less talent)?

Nope. Primarily for field work. We have other preferred traction devices for snow.

Actually, I have no idea what the handle is yet. I was thinking Bakelite went into the late 50's, but after checkin online, I see it pretty much ended in the war. It looks like some kind of plastic, but I'm soaking rust and grime off and hopefully will be able to tell more later. One side is much dirtier than the other. I'm still guessing
60's or 70's based on its depth, but earlier would be even better.

One of the guys I work with is a farrier. Ill have him look at it.

The Bakelite I remember was black and was from the 30's / 40's. I have a couple of old meters (ohm and volt) from those days. You know when you find a pocket knife, loose change can't be far behind :lol:
