Always around citys (or bigger villages) or near rivers, in particular where they use to bade or cross.
In mediëval times people have been depositing their dirt (streetdirt etc) on the fields for manuring.
Just use Google earth to zoom in nearby citys and the fields around it, you will see the old structures.

I have been visiting Bretange, Dodogne and the Ardesh. But you will find roman in every region and mediëval also...GH !

You're visiting great and beautiful areas of France. I was actually in Bretagne the first 2 weeks in August. Been to Dordogne and Ardeche in the past too. (Good food too !!)

Keep me posted if you ever visit France during Christmas time or the Summer. That's when I usually go there.
