My first New Jersey Colonial Copper!

Hi everyone! I went out yesterday with Danny LaMontagne. We hiked for miles and miles, up and down ridges, through swamps and mountain laurel to hunt for colonial relics and cellar holes. I found my very first New Jersey Colonial Copper, dated 1787, at a very small and old site. It was about 10 feet from the cellar hole at the base of a small tree at the third site we visited. The reverse is absolutely gorgeous. It couldn't have circulated for very long prior to being lost.17952681_10208869834566756_3612772277529752270_n.jpg17991156_10208869590760661_579621588148038859_n.jpg17903937_10208860050842169_3447102341444738021_n.jpg17904273_10208869833966741_475236667132421003_n.jpg17951898_10208869590560656_7687549505114106170_n.jpg17522574_10208869686163046_2358371816574168428_n.jpg

Thanks Danny. I owe it all to you, my friend. I'm still amazed that you found that site. :clapping: I wish I had taken a pic of the hole. That was an old one.

Thanks everyone. I used a cleaning method that I learned from Danny LaMontagne. I heated the coin up multiple times with a heat lamp and gently removed the concretion from the obverse. This took multiple attempts and patience. The reverse was easy. It must have been the side protected from the weather.17952618_10208875867957587_2612385973138684989_n.jpg17952745_10208875637791833_8155133721440067002_n.jpg17991156_10208869590760661_579621588148038859_n.jpg

Donnie, have you posted this info about your cleaning methods on the " cleaning forum" if not I'd like to read about it and follow up.. amazing job

I used Danny LaMontagne's (del) "heat lamp" method which he posted in cleaning methods. The only thing I used was a heat lamp and tooth picks. I had to heat the coin up multiple times on the obverse and scrape away the hard layer with a tooth pick. The reverse was easy and I only had to heat it up once just to dry out the dirt.

One caution: I got lucky in that the corrosion was not under the patina. If the corrosion is under the patina then the patina will come off when it dries out leaving a "dead" coin.

:shocked05: Whoa!! :shocked03:
Was the cellar hole out in front of the mint?! :shocked04:
That coin didn't see too many hands before being lost. Its in great shape with next to NO wear! Amazing!:perfect10:
Congrats!

Wow, that New Jersey copper is GORGEOUS! :loveit:

That's the kind of find we all dream about. It had to have been dropped son after it was minted. Incredible find!

:perfect10:

Thank you! I'm still in shock. Yes, I don't think it circulated very much before it was lost next to that cellar hole. If only it could talk.

Thank you! I'm still on Cloud 9!
Congrats on a first, it is an amazing find, WTG.
Danny has taught me more about cleaning coins than anyone. I wish I hadn't experimented (and ruined) so many nice ones over the years.
Never had luck using a tooth pick. Will have to try the heating method. :envious:
I fell in love with the Jersey Coppers the first time I saw one. I really wanted to find one but I was in shock when I saw that shield.
GREAT COIN! :notworthy::envious: Still on my bucket list! Congrats!
I really got lucky. Thank you!
I have never seen an old copper like that! amazing!!
It was all luck. It was deep and reading like a coin or a bent nail. It read enough like a coin that I decided to dig it.
WOW! I've never seen a NJ in that great shape!
Thank you!!
:wow: The condition is amazing :congrats:
I just got lucky, really, really, lucky!

Thank you!
That's a killer NJ. :congrats:
I still can't believe it. If Danny had said, "walk that way nine miles and you will find a Jersey copper," I would have ran!
Well worth the trek thru the woods. That NJ is absolutely beautiful.....:congrats:
It's definitely a day, and a find, that I will never forget. Thank you!
