1600s Cob and 2 Largies in New Jersey

Coinshooter
Wrap up of today's 5 hour hunt today in New Jersey.

1822 Coronet Large Cent, undatable Braided Hair Large Cent (1840-1857), 5 buttons and what seems to be a 1621-1665 Spanish Colonial Philip IV Silver Cob.

Any Spanish Cob experts on the forum? Any info on the cob would be greatly appreciated!

Update: I've gotten a lot of feedback from very helpful people and it looks like the cob I dug is a Philip IV 1621-1665 Spanish 1 Real Cob. It's believed the cuts are from the original creation of the cob and not from a cut occurring later.

Congratulations on some awesome finds! I would check with Lee about the cob. He seemed pretty knowledgeable about them when he found that one last year. Best wishes and HH Dave.

I'm still thinking that's a bit old for where I found it. I'm not aware of any other 1600s coins that were recovered from this spot, but lots of early 1700s were. I still plan to seek additional opinions, but 4 people gave me the same estimate so maybe it's just me having a hard time realizing what I actually dug.

Thanks to everyone who helped identify this cob and thank you for all the kind words!

Very nice finds, indeed! :clapping:

That 1822 Large Cent is a real looker! It came out of the ground in great condition. Soon to be 200 years old!

The Spanish cob is an incredible find! I'm glad that you were able to obtain some info about it. Soon to be 400 years old! :thumbsup01:

In case anyone else ever needs to identify a cob, here is some great info provided to me by New World Treasures.

It looks like I have a pretty solid ID.

SPAIN - 1665-1700 Charles II Hammered 1 Real Cob. (Mexico mint)

It could be from the time period of Philip IV (1621-1665), but the more vertical lines of old burgundy (lower left side of the shield) makes me believe the coin is that of Charles II (1665-1700). Coins of Philip IV have distinctly diagonal lines during the period that coincide with coins other shield details. Most coin's from the time period of Charles II are quite rare, particularly during the 1680's and 1690's, so your coin was likely struck in the early years of Charles II. I believe it is a 1 real that was struck with both sides way off center. The shield and cross size looks to be correct for a 1 real coin and too small for a 2 reales coin. The coin does not appear to be cut after it was made.

Way to go Ken! Man, just great finds. Still looking for my first cob. Love your shot of the LC still in the dirt clod. Don't you just love the feeling when you see one peeking out like that at you?
